Hello, awhile ago, I installed a Pioneer single din unit in my Explorer. The problem I have with it is that the display is too difficult to read in daylight when it's bright outside. I'm thinking of going to double din -- if they are easier to read and use while driving down the road. Any helpful info?

i have a double din clarion navigation unit in my 2002 mountaineer and I love it. never had an issue during day light, brightness and contrast is adjustable and once you turn the lights on at night it auto adjusts accordingly I believe I am using the clarion nx404

Just make sure it has a flat finish on the glass or LCD screen because a smooth/glass finish will just have too much glare. I didn't think about it when I got the Pioneer double din I have in my 2005 explorer.

The screen/display finish is more important than single/double din in my opinion.

Thank you all for the replies -- keep them coming in. I did notice some complaints on some models that even the double dins have some trouble with seeing the display in bright light -- so it's good to hear which ones do NOT have that problem. I live rural, so am/fm is not that important to me -- until I drive into the city. But I use a USB stick for music, and I need Bluetooth for phone use. And since I live rural, there is no store near me to look at them first -- I'll be ordering one through Amazon or Crutchfield.

Crutchfield is definitely the way to go. I have a double DIN touch screen and it can be difficult to see on occasion, but usually it's fine. I also have a single DIN LED screen it of course is always visible. I like yourself mainly use Bluetooth and music on a jump drive primarily, but also I really like Pandora.

Amazon is significantly cheaper than Crutchfield.

Amazon gives you ZERO free installation gear and tech support. Price difference is insignificant as well.

Nor does Crutchfield, they may "say" it's free but it's not, their jacked up prices cover it.

Lets see at Amazon I spent:
$218.36 - Kenwood DDX372BT Double DIN Bluetooth In-Dash DVD/AM/FM Receiver
$48.95 Pioneer TS-A6885R 6" x 8" 4-Way TS Series (Pair)
$48.95 Pioneer TS-A6885R 6" x 8" 4-Way TS Series (Pair)
$9.47 - Metra 95-5026 Double DIN Installation Kit for Select 2001-up Ford
$3.70 - Metra 70-1771 Radio Wiring Harness for Ford

Amazon Total: $329.43

Now lets take a look at Crutchfield:
$299.99 - Kenwood DDX372BT Double DIN Bluetooth In-Dash DVD/AM/FM
$79.99 - Pioneer TS-A6885R 6" x 8" 4-Way TS Series (Pair)
$79.99 - Pioneer TS-A6885R 6" x 8" 4-Way TS Series (Pair)
FREE - Metra 95-5026 Double DIN Installation Kit for Select 2001-up Ford
FREE - Metra 70-1771 Radio Wiring Harness for Ford

Crutchfield Total: $459.97

Difference of: $130.54

So I would have paid $130.54 for the harness and frame going with Crutchfield vs the $13.70 I spent on them with Amazon.

Try buying something there that's on sale, you can get it cheaper than Amazon. They run some good specials and have excellent service such as one day free shipping. I called tech on a Sunday afternoon because I made a mistake ordering and the harness was at my shop before lunch on Monday, no charge whatsoever. I have bought half a dozen full systems there and of course I always check Amazon, I mean really who doesn't. Crutchfield has always been very competitive. YMMV

+1 on Crutchfield. I've found stuff on there cheaper than amazon, just gotta look at what's on sale. And they're customer service is 2nd to none.

As far as being able to see the screen, the din size is irrelevant.
