Yesterday I experienced smoke and the smell of burning leaves coming out of the interior vents of my 92 X. The heater was on. The smoke completely filled the interior of the vehicle. I was not driving thru smoke or a forest fire! The smoke stopped after approximately two minutes. There does not appear to be any damage to the vehicle, except the interior smells like a campfire. I have told that it is possible for small leaves and debris to enter the system through the fresh air cowl. The leaves collect in the blower housing and can be ignited there. Any ideas?

There has been a similar post in the newsgroup rec.autos.maker.ford.explorer . The trouble he had was a burnt out resistor with leaves all around that caught fire. I sugest that you take a look at the fan resistor area and clean in out before something more serious happens. All the best.

I would look for a mouse nest in the header box.

Mine collects leaves in the blower motor housing and I have to vacuum them out occasionally. The exact thing happened to me awhile back.
