El Dorado county just closed down the area around Spider Lake, due to human waste problem. No, the trail isn't closed - but this is one step in that direction.

So, add a porta-loo to your list of things to carry on the Rubicon...

Actually, it's getting to the point, I'd just bring a porta-loo with you anywhere you go, and use it instead of just squatting and leaving it.

Also, please pack out everything that you bring in - that means stop throwing the trash on the fire, take it home with you, and throw it in the regular trash.

I also need to find some oil containtment system stuff - oil is becoming a giant concern also.

Why not dig a 6-8inch deep latrine? Thats what i've always done.. or is that to shallow?

It's solid granite in that area, and for miles around. Not enough dirt to dig a hole - plus they estimate 50k people visit that area in a 6 months it's open; so there's an estimate of 100k lbs of human waste being deposited each year.

Some areas no longer allow trenches or digging of holes for toliets. Several areas in Utah have a 'It's pack *everything* out' rule. That is coming to more areas.

Ahh I see. I also dont frequent the areas you speak of. I like to go to less "populated/popular" areas when camping :)

WOW. When WILL people learn.

I am AMAZED out here in CA how bad it is at some of the places...people just seem to think,"well its too late, not going to matter if I throw my beer cans over there next to those other 3"

I am the guy who comes along and picks up those 4 beer cans and hauls them down the hill in my truck.....

I hate scumbags with no respect for the sport, nature, or this planet.

PACK IT IN PACK IT OUT.

If you see jackasses on the trail throwing trash or whatever, take their picture! I am going to build a webpage to showcase them and their trucks to the whole 4x4 community...

So when you say "Pack it out" you are talking your own $h!t? That won't happen. That's rediculous.Does a Bear $h!t in the woods? YES! Maybe you don't have as much back country as us, but I have never heard of no poopin' in the woods.

Okay picture this:

You are at the beach here in So Cal, every 3rd of 4th person takes a dump in the sand.
How long do you think it will be before the beach is closed?
You see whats happening is too many people, you will never get enough bears in one area to close down a forest, I agree, but we are fighting a battle to keep our OHV area's, open space, and lakes OPEN.

I am a big time camping finatic, and I agree you dont need a porta potti with you everywhere, but you do need to follow the rules.
Trail abuse, litter and human fecis is killing our position in the battle to keep them open....

Question: Are the backpacking Sierra-club folks carrying their poop with them as they hike???

-Ken

probably not but if its in the rules then they should be!!
Not everyone will do their part, but I will.....

I was raised with this rule and respect for the land. About 8 years ago I got so sick of seeing all the crap (no pun intended) humans left behind when camping I decided I would never litter again if I could help it, and I haven't.

Now I have lost a hat or two to the lake, driven off the trail more then once, had paper fly out of my car, and stuff like that but if I can help it I will continue to do my part, and more, I pick up trash every single day... Not like me picking up that one wrapper from the parking lot in So Cal is going to make a difference, but at least I know I am not the reason for it...

I am still about 1.5-2 years away from feasably making a trip to the con. I just hope its still there when i can finally make it.:( Also, the Spider Lake area is temp. closed for 120 days... i hate to be pessimistic i honestly dont think they'll reopen it.

They are encouraged to do so in the Wilderness areas.

As for packing out your feces - yes, you can be required to do it. Go on a white water river rafting trip - Most if not all of them now pack *everything* back out, including feces.

There are products on the market to help deal with this problem; you can find them doing simple web searches, and places like CampMor and Cabela's.

perfect reason to get one of these... http://www.moderntradingpost.com/bumper_dumper/then you dont need try to direct your poop into a bag... its liek a reular toilet... then seal up the bucket and take it home, or at least to a spot where you can evacuate it properly....

linky no worky

DANG..Jim beat me to it, well here's a pic and my take on it lol (posted before I saw jims post)

I might be in the minority here but I don't care to pick up my crap lol...here's a solution for those like me!

Seems like a convienient sanitary way to pack your crap so to speak. I was thinking...if you took a tarp and just pined it up to an opend rear hatch you would have a nice private way to communicate with nature.

Yeah i know this has probably been posted before but since the topic reared it's ugly head I thought i'd post it again

Later!

:D That is Hilarious.
It doesn't look like that bad a thing to use.
"When it comes to #2, We are #1" LOL

This is beyond words, LMAO, bumper dumper LOL!!! :bounce:

Like Tom said before...with the estimated 50k or so people visiting the famous Rubicon, thinks like human waste becomes a real problem real fast unfortunately and a little effort on our part no matter how much it may seem to inconvenience us goes a long way in keeping trails open.
