[SOLVED] What is this thing that's leaking?

What is this?

My dad recently had the front tires replaced on our 96 Explorer. And on his way back a wire got tangled around this thing in the rear. And my dad removed most of the wire but now it's leaking. My dad wants to fix it himself, but he don't know what it is or how to fix it. So I, being the tech guy of the house, searched the Internet for answers and I still don't know.

So what is this and how can we fix it?

Looks like the pinion seal got damaged. You may need the rear axle flange also because there is deflector seal on that which looks damaged.

I don't know much and I'm probably saying the same thing that swetrid is saying but... It looks like some wire (not sure where it might have come from) has become lodged inbetween your differential and the driveshaft cutting and/or damaging the seal and causing differential fluid to come out... Not sure how to fix it as I don't know too much but that looks like the problem to me...

Well at least it looks all the bolts will have been soaked long enough in oil to come out easily! Good luck with the fix

Thank you for the help. My dad has gone out and got a replacement seal. And I've found some instructions on how to replace the seal and add the differential fluid.

Just one more question: What is the specific gear fluid for the rear differential?

80-90, with friction modifier if you have limited slip

limited slip 75-140 synthetic at least for 99-01 would a 1996 be different?
I'm using 75-110 amsoil severe gear with no friction modifier

No, the ford manual calls for 80w-90. I don't know why you think 75-140 is appropriate.

If you have a limited slip in your 00 eb you should switch it out for 75-140 synthetic.

Well its staring at me right in the face out of the owners manual (75-140)...

The damn Ford Professional Technician Society (OASIS) insists on 80-90 with friction modifier, so I can only imagine how many rear ends dealerships have put the wrong fluid in. Thanks for correcting me... now to go flush ughhh.

in 96. the rear diff uses only 80-90. on my 98 it is either 80-90 or 75-140 syn. depending on which diff you have. but yuo have a 96 so you need 80-90 gear lube.
