Hey I have a surround sound speaker setup (Dell 5.1)
that is connected to my computer My comp has windows vista and is maybe a year old now but the surround is like 7 yrs old or so.

For some reason the side speakers crap out and you can just hear the center. Once in a while the side speakers will work.
I am trying to figure out if it is a problem with the computer itself or the surround system. Is there an easy way to troubleshoot this and decide where the trouble is?

The surround is run from the subwoofer part of the system, like you plug the pc into it and then the spaekers all come out of it. I think pretty well all of them work that way.

thanks

Can you find another computer to hook the speakers to?

Alternatively if you had another set of regular stereo speakers, plug them in to each of the three ports for the surround speakers one at a time and see if sound comes out.

Also, what happens if you change the settings on the computer to only put out 2.1 sound? Do they work correctly then?

Alright, the speaker plugs in the surround enclosure actually have odd shaped plugs so that you always plug the right speakers in the right spots I guess so I can't really do anything there.
I could plug in a different speaker in the jacks in the back of the PC though I think.
I can't recall right now but I think there was three plugs back there that the surround plugged into. I guess I will have to just buck up and start moving stuff out of the way so I can't get at the wiring mess back there..

I can run my audio manager and test each speaker while watching an animated example of which ones should be making sound. I hear the sound only in the center speaker BUT along with the higher pitched sound is an underlying bass beat that plays on my subwoofer when every speaker is highlighted.
I can hear the subwoofer for every speaker that is being tested but of course right now I only hear the high pitch part when it cycles to the center.

Changing the settings doesn't do anything -Stereo-Quadrophonic-5.1-7.1

My best bet would be speakers, since everything comes out of the subwoofer
