I wanted to replace the speakers in my 1992 Explorer Factory AM FM cassette radio with toggle volume control. A local installer said I would have to change the radio, they said you could not put different speakers in that factory system. I understand the impedance (ohms) and power handling need to match, but why would different speakers not work. They are supposedly a good shop whats the deal????

The 1992 Explorer with the toggle volume has a single amplifier in the right rear (behind the panel). Changing speakers is very very very easy... The hardest part is getting the door panel off. If you change the head unit you will need to bypass the amplifier which means you buy a bypass kit (Radio install kits from Checker/Kragen come with it).

The speakers you currently have use a connector to connect the wire to the speaker. I cut the connect off and used normal spade style connectors (what is normally on a radio) to connect my new speakers.

If I remember correctly, Crutchfield (http://www.crutchfield.com) can sell you not only the speakers but an adapter that connects your new speakers to the old connector (so you don't need to cut the wire). I don't think it is worth it, but if you want to be able to easily put your old speakers back it might be worth it.
