This information is for vehicles that have a mechanically (cable) driven speedometer, with the cable sourcing from the transfer case. This information may or may not apply to other vehicles.

In my quest to get the speedometer to read correctly, I have come across some information from Ford that apparently most dealers do not have (or at least do not know they have.) I thought I would write this up and post the Ford part numbers - might help someone in the future.

The BW 1354 transfer case uses "Manual Transmission Drive Gears", part number 17271. These gears are available in 16 to 21 teeth.

For reference, my '93 with 3.73 gears and P265-75-15 tires came from the factory with a 19-tooth gear.

Teeth Color Part Number

16 Wine C0DZ-17371-A
17 White C3DZ-17271-C
18 Yellow C0DD-17271-B
19 Pink C0DZ-17271-B
20 Black C1DZ-17271-A
21 Red C4OZ-17271-A

The picture shows an 18, 19, 20 and 21 tooth gear and part numbers.

Great to have part #'s...

Its odd that they call them drive gears when they are actually the driven gear. The drive gear is in the trans/transfer case and is what turns the gears above.

I know. I was expecting a driven gear too.

Perhaps, the gear "drives" the speedometer - thinking from the perspective of the cable.

Just a thought...

There is another white one with 22 teeth. I have one, it's a Dodge part. It works, but was off so I went back to the 21 tooth. Some Mustang guys use it to get their speedometers correct. Might work when I go to 35's with my 4.56s.

..Just letting you know this comes in handy as I used this at the Ford dealer tonight as they didn't have any info for a Auto trans speed sensor..

..Thanks..:biggthump
