The speedo on my 96 sport works perfectly until the vehicle warms up then drops down to zero while rmps work all the time. Does the 96 have a speed sensor or is it a cable? My clutch was replaced and the problem started. If it has the sensor is it faulting due to too much amperage going through a bad relay?

If it was a sensor problem you'd most likely get a "check engine" light or a flashing OD light.

There is a motor on the cluster which drives the speedometer, through gearing. I bet that is the issue.

I have the identical issue with my 98 XLT V-6 SOHC engine, auto trans. From what I gather the problem is a failure of an electrical component within the speedometer unit itself (it is electronic). And you cannot replace the speedometer only, you must replace the entire gauge cluster. Check Rock Auto for a replacement. Hope this info helps.

Rock Auto has one for 170 but I have a manual transmission and they have the gear selector shown. Does anyone know of a company that rebuilds clusters?
