hello, i'm just wondering if the wiring harness for a 5spd 1991 explorer needs to be changed out when dropping in a auto. i know the computer does but unsure of the harness. everywhere i've read it doens't say anything about changing the harness, just the computer, or is it a given that the harness has to change also?

yes you will need the wiring harness as well. the manual harness doesn't have the plugs for the shift soildnoids or the netural safety switch.

You swap out the transmission harness not the computer harness.
You may need to add 2 wires to your computer harness for the 2-3 and 3-4 shift solenoids but I doubt it. I think I had to add tthem only because I had pulled them out previously (I built my 4.0L harness from scratch)

alright, sounds like this is gonna be fun, the guy i bought the truck from already put a wire harness from an auto XLT into this one which was a base model 5spd. rear park lights would stay on all the time, along with all the dash lights and the 4x4 button lights would be on when ever you put it in drive or reverse, and the buttons wouldn't control nothing. nothing like fixing others mistakes LOL

so what are you gonna do with your old tgrans and xfer case? dibs!! LOL

well...i do have a t-case and a 5spd in the back of it, but it's stuck in 3rd, it's my friends so i'd have to ask him what he'd sell it for, we also have a XLT that were going to be rodding parts from so we might have other things. keep in mind..comfort items are spoken for and going in the daily driver LOL.

well , on a good note though, got the truck running again with the orig harness back in, everythings working fine, lights are working proper, 4x4 works (needs to be used and broken back in) but there's a few wires on the drivers side that go down to the tranny that we wern't able to connect the wires because the harness's are different. i should have some pics tommrow if someone would like to take a moment to help out hooking the wires together. if i need them. i took it for a quik spin down the driveway and got to 30km/h and it didn't shift, but not sure what the shift points are.

ok, well here's a pic of the wire harness's i have to deal with.

as you can see, someone's already hacked at the harness going to the tranny. i'm just wondering if i connect the main harness with the red and gree twisted wire to the harness with the same twisted wires going to the tranny, would that work? and yes, those wires will be moved and routed better then they are now, and spliced alot better as well LOL
