1989 aerostar panel van
Hi to all in the forums, My name is burt and I have a 1989 aerostar panel van with the 3.0 v6 and auto. I am having a problem with the running conditions though, it pops out the intake like popcorn, I have to pump the gas to keep it running, it wont idle, it's becoming a pain in the butt. Ive replaced the fuel filter, fpr, dist cap, rotor wires and plugs to no avail, and it's still doing the same thing. Ive read all the posts on here concerning starting, running issues and have tryed everything but the fuel pump and the ecu. Im getting a rich running condition and the exaust has a strong smell comming out. Ive checked the cat and it seems to be flowing well. What could it be or where should I go to next, o2's, adle air control valve, tps????? Any and all thoughts will be helpfull.

Thank you for the info, I'll try cleaning the tb,iacv, and im. I'll let you know if it works.

Thabnk you. Can I use the MAF cleaner on the IACV as well?

Unplug the MAF, and see if it starts. Another thing to try is to turn the engine with a ratchet, and leave the electrical system on. You should hear the fuel pump prime every time you turn the engine. If this doesn't happen, then it might be a problem with a crankshaft/camshaft position sensor.

I unplugged the MAF and there was no difference. :dunno: Where is the camshaft position sensor located?

Tryed changing the sensors on the intake and no luck. Am in the process of doing the timing chain just in case and to check and make sure the timing is on. Will let you all know.

Changed out the camshaft position sensor, though there was improvement in the idle it still wouldn't hold.

My brother had the day off today so we went to O'reilly's and went for broke and bought a new Mass Flow Sensor. Looks like it did the trick. I rode it around the block and went to the store.

I'll see what happens tomorrow when I take it on the freeway to work...Wish me luck! :us:

Ok, so im about pissed with this thing. Still no change, although the popcorn sound is gone. List of things changed: fuel pump, fuel filter, fuel pressure regulator, distributor cap and rotor, spark plug wires and plugs, timing chain, water pump, ecu, tps and the other sensor on the tb. It runns smother now that the timing chain has been changed but still wont idle. How do I check for codes on these? It does throw a code after 20 min of it staying running by pumping the gas. Wheres the maf on these things? Could it be the ignitor in the distributor? I'm about to send this thing off a cliff. Now if this were a mitsubishi made vehicle, I would be able to pinpoint it in a heartbeat. Yes my other vehicle is a turbo galant, 375 whp & 345 tq on 24 psi.Any sugestions??????

Your 89 doesn't have a MAF sensor. You could read the codes with a jumper wire or a paper clip if you attact it to the EEC-IV test connector. Check the sticky threads on the top of the EEC-IV section for help on how do this. I have a link in # 17 in my list of useful threads with information on codes: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=160035

ran it for 30 min. by pumping the gas and still no check engine light. Light works only when you first start it up then nothing. Any thoughts?

yes, it was cleaned and replaced. I found the map wasnt on the intake, its on the firewall and am in the process of replacing it now. Tps, iacv and the air intake temp sensor was changed. could it be the ignition module in the distributor? It doesnt really sound like its loosing spark, it sounds more like a sensor making the fuel management system chock the engine out. Not flood the engine, but like it cuts the fuel out and the minute you hit the gas it responds right back to health. It also sounds like the motor is missing a little when you give it too much throttle. Sound familliar at all? let me know what you think might be the issue. I'm going to read the codes and do some more eec tests to see if it gives me any insight to what might be wrong. Thanks.
