On my '96 4.0 this problem has been happening once in a while for a couple of months, did it again just now. When I turned the key to start it absolutely nothing happened. No sound or anything. Second try same thing, but then when I let off on the key the doors locked. Third try it started right up. Any
idea what could be going on?

When you turn the key to the ACC position do you have radio, lights, etc? I had a Bronco II that had a bad ground from the battery and it caused me similar headaches. Check your batt terminals and where it connects to the frame to start. (no pun intended)

Thanks, I'll remove the cables and clean 'em up. I can't say what would happen if I turned to acc., as it only does it once every week or two, I can't try it unless it does it again.

This could be the same problem im having. The interuptor switch in the starter cuicuit is faulty. So the car thinks its in gear and wont start.
