I salvaged some step bars from a 1999 4-door XLS to install on my 1998 4-door XLT. The problem is, the plastic rocker panels don't seem designed to accommodate a step bar (they flare out near the wheels, and they don't have the holes drilled in them for the attachment nutplates).
Has anyone else done this, and what have people come up with for solutions? New rocker panels? Will actual running boards fit without modification?
