Stiff Shifter

Hey guys,

I tried searching and looked through all of the sticky's but perhaps I wasn't using the correct terms.

Anyways, I have a 1998 AWD Ford Explorer Sport with 146,000 miles on it and an automatc transmission. The transmission is running strong with no issues and I had the tranny flushed recently. My problem is my shifter is stiff. It doesn't have any problems shifting into gears, its just the physical motion of moving the shifter. What am I looking at here, a shift cable replacement or something else?

You could lubricate the cable, and shift linkage parts. It might have a kink in the cable. You would have to replace it if this is the case.

thanks for the prompt reply. How exactly do you lubricate the cable?

Put oil, grease or WD40 on any moving part on the linkage, and on the inside of the cable. Put it into park, lube it, then put it into 1st with the parking brake applied, then lube it again.

i have tthe same problem. replaced the cable and its still the same
