Has anybody ever done a 4.0 to 4.2 swap? Ford used them until 2002, right? They had pushrods if I recall, and other than being a wider V6 (90 degree), they are similar displacement and horsepower. Could I get a 4.2 engine/trans from an E or F150 the same year and pop that in?
I don't know much about those engines or their reliability, but the older 3.8 that it was based on ran forever, but killed just about every transmission they put behind it, at least in FWD models.
I have been looking for good used engines around here and I haven't found any 2002 4.0 engines with balance shafts. I can't believe the price of a reman/rebuilt longblock.
I plan on pulling the 4.0 anyway because the rear tensioner guide, the primary tensioner, and the balance shaft tensioner are all broken. I also had some oil and coolant mixing, and I am not yet sure the reason. I hope to have it out sometime next week so I can pull the heads and the oil cooler to visually inspect them for failure.
I have the tools and the know how to do this job, I just cringe wondering how many times I will have to do it, and if the cost is going to be significant anyway (replacing a cylinder head), I would almost rather re-work the whole truck to get rid of that 4.0.
