I picked up a '93 Eddie Bauer from a neighbor for $180 because the tranny was "out" and he was gunna scrap it. Other than the ton of miles, needing a few interior pieces, and tranny issues it's a nice enough rig to make into a daily driver and keep for a while. Before someone says it anyways, YES, I have used the search to get some ideas of what could be wrong. Unfortunately nothing has come up with exactly the same symptoms. I've done just about everything there is to do on a vehicle except screw with an automatic, of the 25 cars I've had this is the first with this type of issue.

So, if I start it up and immediately shift into R or D it takes a few seconds before the RPMs drop and it moves around just fine. I've driven it a few blocks at a time w/o any problems and it shifts in and out of the gears just fine. The biggest concern comes when you put it in park and let it idle for a few minutes, then when you select ANY gear the RPMs don't drop like normal and if you rev it at all it doesn't make any attempt to move. The fluid is up and clean and I'm already planning of doing a full flush, filter, and modulator. I have no objection to getting another tranny and TC from the boneyard but of course that can lead me into other issues as well. Thoughts?

So here's an update. I decided to take a chance and got her up to 55-60 mph just outside of town. It got up to speed and drove just fine but when I turned around it stayed in what I'm guessing was 2nd gear and would not shift out of it. I babied it home at about 25 mph as it was slipping the whole time. I parked it thinking it would do what it normally does and it would move again after cooling down. Now it doesn't do anything. Pretty sure it's time for a working replacement or a rebuild...

No doubt you will find issues as you disassemble it. Better yet, find a 5 speed and everything you need to switch it over... if you are really wanting to rebuild it follow Glacier's thread. He goes into great detail about which parts need to be replaced and how to build a trans that will last a long long time.

You might find a blown out valve body gasket or something easily fixed and decide to just rebuild the VB. Who knows?

I'd love to do a 5sp and manual tc swap but I'm lacking the time and funds to hunt for the parts or a complete parts rig to do it. After talking with a reputable tranny guy locally it sounds like the 1st/reverse clutch is shot. All I can do for now is get it out and tear into it I guess then decide whether to replace or rebuild. I'm gunna gut the interior while I'm at it to do carpet, seats, and a headliner while detailing all of the plastics in the process. Should look, run, and drive like it has 1/3 the miles when I finish...

That's the spirit, PM me your email and I will send you something that will be very helpful...
