strange problem, need help

you sir, are not from Commufornia..... errr, California. We cannot just replace the cats here. Want to know a quick way to go to jail for 10 years more than a child rapist, just replace the cats on your car in Commu.. err California. Seriously though, Cats are expensive, and this isn't exactly easy, to replace, it isn't a seperate part. I have to buy the entire assembly. From the mani back. I would just love to replace the entire exhaust, but I was wondering if there are other cars with the same exhaust that I can scavenge from "junkyard", with the same exhaust setup as mine?

Wow. And I thought the emissions standards were tough in New Jersey. Please accept my humble apologies. I had no idea. Any 99-01 Explorer or Mountaineer with the same engine(Cali emissions of course) should work.

groovetacular, thanks, looks like tomorrow, I'm goin to the junkyard;)

dummy

YEP! I'm ah dummah. I used the jack in sand without the use of a stabilizing plate, and jacked the sploder up to access the front o2's. I got out of the way in time to see it slam to the ground. The question now is, How on earth do I get it back up? *sigh* I alsway give good advice, but I seldom ever follow it. Folks, learn from my stupidity and use jack stands and a stabilizing device ex."wood, metal plate" to distribute the weight of the jack and stands evenly and prevent movement, sinking, and inevitably, to keep your ride from falling to the dirt. The good news: I did want to "lower" the car LOL!

replace all plugs now, ant the front o2's as well. I have the following codes.
P0720
P0156
P1131
P1150 pending
stikk runs like poo, even after disconnecting the neg, term and resetting the MAP.

Dude you got lucky. In WV we gut the cats. Stand on his tail, sharp knife and..... Punch em out. Emissions are just a money making racket.

Man be safe, jack stands x 2 always, and leave jack in place.

cat guts make for excellent instrument strings "damn PETA" but yeah, lesson learned, never again. I was looking at the speed sensor code, thinking that it was just an effect from the o2's and computer compensation. After changing the o2's however, I noticed it still isn't running right, hooking up the CODIS confirmed this, the PCM was running in limp mode. I started looking for this notorious sensor, however, it was not connected. The sensor is there, but no connector. I was unsure how to continue, so I just started looking along the wiring harness, hoping that the previous owner had left me at least a tidbit of cable left to go off of. No connector. I did discover, however, that there is a gray connector as part of the transmission harness that had two wires severed. I soldered them and covered them and reconnected the connector "PITA!!!" Still no sign of the connector or a way it could have or did connect to the old wiring harness. I was told by the previous owner that it "the transmission" was recently changed before purchase. Things I also noticed today, the pass side rear exhaust mani studs are sheared off inside the head "more fun" the fuel level sensor needs replaced. I desperately NEED a GEM, the accesories are getting out of hand.

Check Injectors, My 95 ex 4.0 had that smell and ran bad. turned out to be my #4 injector.

next on the list, injector check, how do I do that? As for the cats, stripped and gutted one, the other was already gutted previously. It still sounds like it has an exhaust leak around the area of the cats. I am going to do an entire oil change flush, oil looks like it should have come out of a diesel. Exhaust removal=PITA! took me just about all day, reassembled with antisieze this time, so When I replace the cats it will be easier. Headers with full cat back sounds nice at this point, especially if I can remove that rediculously HUGE muffler. I also want to see about rerouting the exhaust and making a true dual exhaust. The plactic cover on top of the fuel tank is rubbing the driveshaft down to nothing, I need to fix that too. I live in cali, so minor surface rust only, such a charm to work on.;)

Looking at another post, I noticed that the OSS is not the sensor that I thought that it was. Apparently I was looking at the VSS or variable speed sensor, I now need an output shaft speed sensor. Got it. On To AUTOJUNK! I will see if I am lucky enough to be able to change it tonight, wish me luck.

no luck, now I remember why I never gamble. tomorrow off comes the access hatch and clean comes the sensor. I hope that is all it is. The wires were all messed up and stripped down, so I fixed the connector wires, but still no change.

new code time

I got some new codes now, P0156, P1131, P1152 I know that there is a problem with too much fuel, but only on the pass. side. looks to me like dirty, clogged injectors. put some lucas in, will try doing the seafoam thing tomorrow to see if there is any change. Sensor 2 bank 2 means that the pass side is getting trown off somehow. I know my o2's are good because I just changed them. I did notice a difference after adding lucas, and after clearing the codes. Driveability has improved greatly, I want to say that there is more time and duration during the not poo driving experience, as opposed to the poo driving experience. The codes are a clue, I am thinking an injector on the pass side or possibly all three are clogged, but I need to do a test on them to be sure.

thanks to all who made this possible,

Nintendo

seafoam, lucas

Seafoam'd it, as well as adding seafoam to the oil and gas. I also added a bottle of lucas injector cleaner to the tank, already seems a bit better, however, the lows seem lower, and it feels more like it will die when it gets there. Tomorrow comes more code reading, hooking up the codis for realtime diagnostic monitoring to see what is going on. I will also check the injectors, the coilpack, the compression, and the PCM.

back to vacuum leak

looks like all roads lead to Rome. I am looking for a vacuum leak somewhere. The hard thing is that it is inconsistent, so a valve possibly or a diaphragm going bad somewhere....... I do know something though, my heater stays on defrost, blows warm, but stays on defrost looked here to possibly fix the problem:

still looking for a vacuum leak, what a PITA! wish me luck.

Turkey?

I would love to enjoy my Thanksgiving, however, My sploder is still broke *sad*
Happy Thanksgiving Everyone

blew smoke all inside of the intake, with a 99c cigar. no joy on the vacuum leak. I am thinking that my problem stems from the fact that there is no cats. the second o2 isn't getting hot enough so it richens the fuel, which would make the cat, and exhaust hoter..... if the cat was there. now I'm just running richer for no reason.

bad cats

I went to the scrapyard and got me some goodies. Pulled from a newer explorer than mine with the 4.0 sohc. I got a set of plug wires, plus the coilpack, got the fan "mine is cracked" I was looking at the fuel rail and injectors, but am unsure if they will fit my explorer. I believe that the explorer was an 05' but could be wrong, this thing was nice, probably the nicest in the whole scrapyard. I have to buy the cats, CA legal, which will set me back almost a grand in just parts. That is more money than I have invested in the whole car so far. Stupid previous owner let the fuel system go so bad that the cats disintegrated, and now I have to fit the bill. I pulled some other goodies to complete my sploder, like an overhead bulb holder and a screw for a rear taillight assy. and a rear windshield wiper arm. I also picked up a new spare full sized rim.

You have a lot more luck than I. I picked up a 99 xlt 2wd 5.0 and chasing down a few little issues.

I too made a trip to 2 or 3 of the local "U-Pull-It" yards and have yet to find the little lug nut caps for the factory alloy wheels. I can not find that little tool to lower the spare tire. I did however find the over head console with the temp/direction display for 20 bucks.

My brother had a 95 exp with a 302 in it. It too had a bad cat on it. It too was running like poo and even set the lawn on fire after he had parked it on the dry grass.

Good luck chasing down your issues with it.

Cheers
Rick

there were a few of those, "direction/temp" however, I don't want to buy one until I troubleshoot first to be sure that the whole module is the problem. No luck on road gear or hub covers though, guess that's everywhere.

Why CA legal?
