I got a call from a friend saying her explorer is broken... long story short it is stuck in 4x4 and i'm not too sure what to do. It is a 2001 4.0 with the auto, 4x4 and 4low switch. I tried shifting it in and out and threw low in neutral... no luck. The lights on the dash say its in out and 4 low but its not. I took the drive shaft out for now so nothing gets too damaged. A shop looked at it and said it was the shifter box, i have never herd of such a thing so they are done working on this. What are some things I should try before replacing the whole transfer case?

Thanks in advance

I'd be looking at an electronic issue before I spent the money to replace the transfer case. I would highly suspect a sensor being bad, making the system think one axle is slipping when it's not.

With the front driveshaft out and the key off, can you turn the front output shaft on the transfer case? If so, I would put money on it being an electrical problem.
