Would it be a good idea to leave the 6 disc in dash changer in the car if im adding a 800 watt mono amp and 2 subs to my system. I would take out the cd player and get a better aftermarket one but im really broke. Can i just hook the subs & amp to the headunit and still be able to turn up and down the subs how would this work. I heard if i do this u wont be able to change the trebble or somthing. Its a 2002 xlt.

you can do it but the subs wont put out bass nearly as clear or as loud as they would with an aftermarket head unit. i forget what the thing is called...a line level converter maybe? you tap into the speaker wires to get rca output for your amp. i ran mine like this and with 400w going to an image dynamics 10 it was pretty lame. well, of course there was more bass than before but it was probably half as loud as it is now with the aftermarket head unit. something to do with the voltage of the rca outputs? im not totally sure, somebody fill in the gaps for me ;)

It sounds like a crap job. One of my friends has a grand prix with a 2 mtx subs hooked up and she still has the stock pontiac headunit and it still sounds really great and she could use the bass contols to turn up and down the subs. It seems like there would be a better way to do it other than cutting into the speaker wires?

ok pal what you need is a in-line level converter. any best buy or audio store no more than 35 bills if you cant find one send me 15 and you can have mine works great just switched my head unit. if you want you can wire the amp in high level, most amps still have a harness that can be used but not as clear get the converter and make sure you ty it in right! thats why people have problems with these they are easy to wire and they hurry thru it take your time and youll only spend half an hour doing the thing. now its not as good as a headunit swap but it will sound good and will keep not lose any of your audio controls. remember also on the converter you have two small controls screws turn them all the way down then back up to match your radio out put and if you want your amp to last keep it at half or below to stop over heating good luck and let us know how it goes
