I had just pulled off the highway and began to accelerate down the road when a loud noise began. It really only occurs when I am accelerating. I pulled over and opened the hood and noticed what seemed to be a hole in a metal pipe on the driver side of the engine. The pipe seems to lead from the exhaust manifold to the top of the engine. Possibly feeding exhaust back into the engine? Not sure, but exhaust is definitely coming out of this pipe into the engine compartment, which is why I really hear it when I accelerate. The pipe is surrounded by some sort of cloth like shielding, which flaps when the engine is revved suggesting there is a hole in the pipe.

Does anyone know what this pipe is, and if I should stop driving until this is repaired. And how could I go about fixing this. It also seems as if I am getting much worse gas mileage after this happened.

Thanks for any help.

That would be the egr (exhaust gas recirculation). You should be able to find a new one at a parts store.
