STORY---------WHAT HAPPENED LEADING TO THE PROBLEM

I WAS OUT WHEELING THIS LAST WEEKEND MAKING MY OWN ROADS IN SOME DEEP SAND. WHILE CLIMBING A DUNE I LOST ALL FORWARD GEARS. I WAS REDLINING THE ENGINE WHILE IN 4X4 -- SO THE TRANSMISSION DEFINATELY WAS UNDER A GREAT DEAL OF STRESS. I HEARD A LOUD SNAP AND LOST ALL POWER TO THE DRIVE SHAFTS---THERE WAS NO WHEEL HOP WHEN THE DAMAGE OCCURRED. I PLACED IN REVERSE AND HAD FULL POWER. I BACKED DOWN THE HILL AND BACK OUT OF THE DUNES ABOUT 3 MILES - TALK ABOUT DANGEROUS. LUCKY THIS IS ALL THAT HAPPEND.

MY X IS A 92 X FULLY STOCK. :salute:

-------------------------------------------------------
NO FORWARD GEARS WORK AT ALL - INFACT IN THE 1ST GEAR POSITION ON THE COLUMN SHIFTER YOU CAN HEAR WHAT APPEARS TO BE A GRINDING NOISE INTERNALLY TO THE TRANSMISSION.

REVERSE IS TOTALLY NORMAL.. NO NOISE - NO LOSS IN POWER AT ALL.
-------------------------------------------------

I AM TAKING IDEAS. WHAT INTERNALLY HAPPENED TO THE TRANSMISSION.

HAS ANYONE HAD THIS ISSUE? IF SO WHAT PART OF THE TRANSMISSION FAILED? :D

I AM THINKING HARD PARTS PARTS NOT COMMONLY REPLACED ON A NORMAL REBUILD.... I WILL KNOW MORE THIS WEEKEND ON DIS-ASSEMBLY. I WILL POST PICTURES OF FAILURE PARTS AND BREAK DOWN ---ADDING TO THIS POST AT A LATER DATE.

I would assume a planetary failed but I am not an auto trans internal expert,it's gonna be an expensive fix I would say.Keep us posted.:D

I wonder if it was an internal shaft but, before the reverse clutches. I have never had one apart yet. That sucks but sounds typical of an A4LD.

Well buddy, you done blowed up your forward planetary set. Good job! ;)
Now, go find yerself a replacement and don't be doing that again!
( I only say it like this because I blowed mine up too )

The way you off-road it - looks like you imploded the internals. Let's see....Need another tranny ? That would my guess.

your not the only one! i did the same thing in sand. sand sucks!
(i blowed mine up as well. i drove home 4 miles with no trans fluid in my a4ld. how cool?)

The A4LD won't handle that kind of abuse for long. I would look into a stronger tranny before you waste any more money on the A4LD.

Used transmissions are cheep. If you do go the route of a used one, pick one from a wreck. At least then you will know it was in motion and most likely working up to the point of the wreck.
Red, maybe we should get together and swap pics of said carnage. Mine was in little ittie bittie pieces... Major grindage!

thanx every one .. loved the advice...

great to hear all those with the same issue or not so good to hear about it ...the A4LD transmission has its faults.... :thumbdwn:weak!!!! ... well if i replace the transmission then i might as well re - power the damn thing so i think its going to be another A4LD..

i just finished pulling the transmission out and looking forward to dissasembly tomaro. i have a little something to add ...this might possibly be partially my fault...well i know its my fault.... i was abusing the damn thing ... good times might i add...... but during removal i did observed the lack of transmission fluid...:D.oooops!!! i did it again..haha ... i had a leak on the pan --- tried to fix it... it didn't work... four times in a row it didn't work. so i gave up.. and we are now here.

--found another used transmission for 100 bucks and thought i would give it a try . with my luck the damn thing ain't going to work... damn i hate pulling the damn transmission out in my drive way. it really does suck.

i have always had the confidence in my stock x..:salute:.... it went where the lifted big tired jeeps went. it went through the mud rock and sand - it jumped - and damn did it climb those hills.. and it bottomed out on everything.. but the minute you don't feed its thirst for transmission fluid due to leaks of course ...the damn thing comes apart.. i hope my next transmission wont leak from any where.
no more leak ... no more leak.. i am probably dreaming. i bet it leaks from everywhere.

well thanks once again. for everyone's input and get ready to see the carnage. i will try to get the pics up with a write up as soon ass possible. probably in a week or so with the way my schedule is looking.

FunkeyMonkey... As you requested...

If you're ga rebuild an A4LD, look up the "Frankentranny" build on here.

Nice work!

My other half had a few "different" words to describe her... um... pleasure in my craftsmanship. Two words... "dog house".

i would be wasting my time

i was going to do a write up on how to rebuild the damn thing but why!!!!
" Project Frankentranny "AKA" A4LD / 4R55E / 5R55E Hybrid Project "was an incredible write up and here is the link for all to read

http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=146953

if you are going to rebuild it.... this dude brian is really onto something.. :salute:and i figure he is a transmission specialist due to the knowledge he provides..

i am definately going to use the 4R55E/5R55E parts n my rebuild. it takes a better part of three hours to read this post but it really is worth it to build a much more reliable a4ld :thumbsup:or should i say molested a4ld. :D

update on my transmission failure.... after beak down . i found not a damn thing wrong with any part of the transmission.. have no clue where the loud noise came from... might have another issue another oops i broke something else.. we will see.

You might want to look into the transfer case... Might just be that easy. Wouldn't hurt to crack it open anyway... if anything, to make sure everything is okiedokie inside. Pay close attention to the oil pump pick up hose and the shifter fork for the range section of the case.
