Hey folks. I've been thinking of upgrading the factory speakers for some time now but I don't know much about speakers. Can anyone recommend something that fits in the doors and works better than what I have now. I'm not looking for high end , something mid range that is noticeably better and louder than stock.
I see all this about ohms and stuff and free air and no air but I don't know what I need. I'll even grab an amp too if it makes a diff but I don't want a box or any major alterations. Any tips appreciated on what to get or not to get.

Thanks
G

I'm in the same boat as you, except mine is a '98. I have the MACH stereo and have been happy with it since it was new. However, after 7 1/2 years, the speakers are worn out. I replaced the subwoofer after it blew a couple of months ago. Now I'm getting some bad sound out of the other speakers somewhere (sounds like one or more of them may have small tear or something). I'm going to go ahead and upgrade all four of the speakers in the doors and be done with it. So far, the only thing I have to go by is what I found on the Crutchfield site. I'm thinking of getting the Pioneer TS-A66870R, 6"X8" 3-way speakers or Boston Acoustics S85, 6"X8" 2-way speakers. The Pioneers are $80 a pair and the Boston Acoustics are $120 pair.

Does anyone know if we can easily install separates or should we stick with 2-way or 3-way speakers?

Anyone have any advice on what speakers to go with and where to get them?

Are those the same as the Polk db570's that Crutchfield sells for $99/pair? If so, how much were they at circuit city? How difficult to install? Did you really have to take the entire door panel off to install them? Thanks!

yeah those are the same speakers im not sure if u can get them for buy one get them half off anymore. installation was easy just remove the door panels, take out the old and put in the new, if your gonna use the stock wiring id advise buying the adapters for the speaker wires so u dont have to cut the stock connectors.

I have pioneer 6x8's 4 ways i bought for 99$ a pair and they sound pretty good compared to stock. they are ratted at 240w max. hope this helps good luck on what ever you buy

I, myself, put some JBLs in the front at 70 watts RMS and a pair of Scosche 60 watt RMS replacements in recently and the difference is crystal. Both were 5x7/6x8 in size and bought on Ebay. I got the Scosche first because they were super cheap and the sound is comparable to a Polk/Pioneer cross for nearly half the price!

The new head unit puts out 20 watts per channel but as I recall they are line input into the factory amp which puts out 80 watts. The sound is rockin' and I am happy to say that I don't mind the rattling mirrors and vibrating door handles! I might suggest buying the speaker plug adapters since I ended up splicing and crimp capping the rears and I simply broke off the plug adapter off of the old factory speakers and soldered them to the new speakers with some spare 16g wires. Cheap but extra work.

Ben :D
