supercharged 5.0 true fire 98 explorer sport

Post number 3431 has been selected as best answered.

hi everyone, my name is tim . i live in selkirk, manitoba, canada and as if this date that i am posting this, i am 36 years old.

i bought my sport in jan 05 from a local ford dealer. it had 111,000KM's on it. this is the second sport i have owned. it was sitting on the lot for about 8 months before i came along. i am the third owner (i was able to track down the person that traded it in, and they got it from a friend, who bought it new in 98).

i started to do a few things to it after i first got it, then i found this site, and all hell broke lose! i've never been satisfied with something the everyone else has, so i started to tinker with it even more.

your truck (as well as corkey) wins truck of the month

is the feature truck on the fun hump day radio show (starts roughly around the 30 min mark)

http://explorerforum.podbean.com/2011/03/23/19-vroom-zoomboom/

and you drive 26 hours ONE WAY to the carlisle all ford nationals in june 2010 and 2011, and grab second place in the s.u.v. all category!

scan00012.jpg

then in 2014 you go back to the same show you have been to 5 years in a row (nothing by most, but its one hell of a long drive) and take first!

Very nice, cherish that wonderful time spent assembling a clean new engine. The cleaning of parts is the worst part, the assembly is the reward. Take your time.

Very nice work. Jealous. As usual.

one more goody to add to the pile.

IMG_0280.jpg

new seal kit, any and all updated parts that it needed and one overdrive ban. as well as a trans go stage II shift kit. getting closer to swap, just need headers then it go time!

It looks good, did you replace all the solenoids and accumulators too?

It looks good, did you replace all the solenoids and accumulators too?

no. when i did drive the truck around that it came out of, there was no signs of any problems. also my buddy that did the trans for me (this is one thing i wont do myself) is a major brain wave at trans. he told me other then the o/d ban looking a little black (which is why he replace it) the inside was spotless. i had told him if he THINKS if anything should be replaced, do it. so if he thinks its fine, i can and will sleep good at night. ;)

The EPC solenoid goes directly into the case, and over long periods the case can become worn larger. A trusted performance builder told me he likes to change the EPC in the 4R70W at 60k miles. The other shift solenoids are basically held firmly in place in the VB, and are good to 100k or more(internal wear).

So if you know the mileage on the parts, change them based on that. I'm building a 29k mile 4R70W, and using almost all new parts(highest level performance), but for a normal rebuild I'd keep all of those parts I have in the trans.

Well done, Tim. Nice work! The motor looks really good on the stand- paint and PC look really good. Will match the rest of the truck nicely. Very well done!

It is long and tedious to do the P&P work, I think we had about 15 hours into my lower intake when we did it on my Mustang. It's one of those things that you get half way in and think 'what the hell am I doing this for?' :D

It got way out of hand, and out of budget on flap wheels. lol!

well he dose very good work, and stands behind it as well (he will warranty all of his work even though he's a one man operation and has given me a break on stuff i have broke in the past on my own stupidity). when i was leaving there today his last word where something like "yea i did (this and that) cause i know you dont want to ever pull the trans out"

he is correct on that one!

joe, thanks! well you know what evil looks like in person, so i couldnt toss a ugly motor in it. that and after seeing Deuce in person, you set the bar a TAD high. i was tempted to p&p the upper but like you said, i would have gotten half of it done and said "why the hell am i doing this????" i knew i couldnt get all the way down the runners as well, and the flappers....yea, that would have got pricey fast.
also, if i can find the cash, i may have found something that may replace most of the top end, not counting heads. not saying, cause i doubt it will happen, but would be fuuuuuuuuuuuuuun! lol

maaaaaaaybe...........

as i said, i doubt it, but it is a possibility. this thing is not suppose to be a race truck and i have to keep thinking that way. i have my screen name for a reason lol.

True, and I guess crankblowboom would sound really suspect as a screen name. :shifty_ey

Enjoy it as it is when it's running again, I'll bet that will keep you happy for a while.

Here's the one you want... ;)

Kenne Bell, 2200.

duh, kenny bell *face palm*

im kinda leery about them. i know a few years back SVO had a motor go south in his boss's (at the time) shelby. it took the motor out after something like 200 miles. kenny bell knew about the problem but did nothing for him or the other people that had them. they gave him a major hard time with it. i cant remember the outcome, but after hearing about it, i will never buy any product they have for sale.

then maybe you meant Kenny Brown Pants?

The KB blowers are not actual KB products, they were Autorotor(of Europe) components sold by KB. The products are excellent, KB is just a hit or miss customer service company. I don't have any personal experience with KB, and I've read a few of those stories too, one from a friend on here. Whipple is evidently the current high end blower to get since 2005.

so jumping off the subject of me getting busted ANYWHERE i go for speeding (and i will if i do put a charger on it, trust me) and back to the 4406. was a little bored today now that i have to wait for the headers, so i grabbed a tape measure to see just how much of a ***** that transfer case will be. well, to my surprise (i hope) not hard at all.
BUT i am going to add these, and we can all fight over this. i have a 01 sport that will be for sale soon, so i used it for measuring (both a 98 and 01 are the same wheel base, but a 98 tank holds 17.3 gallons vs. 20.5 for the 01. where is it bigger, i am not sure). both are auto's, both are 4x4's. so they should both should measure up the same. i crawled under the 01, and did a measurement from the mount on the trans going to the lip of the gas tank (sorry, its hard to hold a tape measure, and take picks at the same time).

IMG_0305_Medium_.jpg

which it roughly 15 1/2 to 16 inches

i went and put the transfer case onto the trans and took a measurement a little further back because i would rather measure it to be longer then shorter (if you know what i am talking about) so i used the bolts to measure from. this is a crewed way to measure it, but i think will work.

then ran the tape to the part that interferes with the gas tank.

IMG_0308_Medium_.jpg

and this is what i came up with

IMG_0310_Medium_.jpg

now granted the mounts are different on the trans cross member, i do believe the trans should land in the same spot as a 5r55e will. so if i am correct, this should go into place just like it would as if it where a four door! WIN! :D

can anyone point anything out that i have missed?
