supercharged 5.0 true fire 98 explorer sport

Post number 3431 has been selected as best answered.

hi everyone, my name is tim . i live in selkirk, manitoba, canada and as if this date that i am posting this, i am 36 years old.

i bought my sport in jan 05 from a local ford dealer. it had 111,000KM's on it. this is the second sport i have owned. it was sitting on the lot for about 8 months before i came along. i am the third owner (i was able to track down the person that traded it in, and they got it from a friend, who bought it new in 98).

i started to do a few things to it after i first got it, then i found this site, and all hell broke lose! i've never been satisfied with something the everyone else has, so i started to tinker with it even more.

http://explorerforum.podbean.com/2011/03/23/19-vroom-zoomboom/

and you drive 26 hours ONE WAY to the carlisle all ford nationals in june 2010 and 2011, and grab second place in the s.u.v. all category!

scan00012.jpg

then in 2014 you go back to the same show you have been to 5 years in a row (nothing by most, but its one hell of a long drive) and take first!

Did you get it installed yet??
Not exactly……

We have had a little water here this year…..well I should say a lot of water! Because we were hit with snow like crazy this winter and also 2 freak snow storms in the beginning of April everything is flooding near me. This is the road I have to use to get to work, in my 16 years of being there I have never seen it flood. Ever.
Most of the snow is now melted but the ground isn’t soaking it in, and this weekend (starting sometime today) we are supposed to get a lot of rain. I also had to deal with my crawl space under my house being flooded, oh and my hot water tank giving out (they make a real bright flash in a pitch black room at 3am, ask me how I know!)
So all of that, as well as my mother falling and breaking her ankle in 3 places. It’s been a hell of a week lol.
Oh, I also bought a ranger that I have to change the motor in as well, so just like last year, evils getting put on the back burner.
Once again sorry for the long winded post.

water has went down. hell, the snow even melted! fixed and put the truck i bought to flip up for sale, and as long as the rain holds back, i finally get to work on evil!!!!!
but being a chicken ****, instead of ripping the wiring out, i decided to place the screen in the place i want it

i wanted to fiberglass it in, but started to think it wouldnt stick to plastic too well (or the sheets at least) so its jb welded into place. ill finish the bodywork in it with either body filler, or plastic bumper repair if i can get some, prime it, then paint it black. wanted to use this one because i removed the rear window wiper from it years ago, then never finished it.

Good spot!

Flooding here too snow is just now melting it’s almost June…my flooding is
Normal though just a little later then usual!

Loving these cooler temps and all this moisture, way better than being on fire!

Can’t wait to see the install.
I will be working on blue truck every day in June till she’s driving

bodywork done. used plastic bumper repair on it. less likely to separate, or hopefully its less likely. its also a ***** to sand.
1.jpg

2.jpg

primed. kinda screwed it up. ran in a few spots.

3.jpg

4.jpg

painted, and disappointed in it. as mentioned plasitc bumper repair is no fun sanding (ask my finger tips right now). there are also spots i missed when i primed it, and you can see the pock marks. im going to leave it for now, but i am sure it will drive me nuts and at one point i will pull it out of the truck and redo it, but for now it stays. who knows, when i put it in the truck i might not even like it.

Actually looks pretty good! Maybe a little more filler? Plastidip?

well this morning i took evil for its last ride with the factory ford system in it, and started to rip it apart.

3.jpg

4.jpg

5.jpg

i had to take it down this far because i need to add map sensor to the intake below the blower. thankfully there is enough room to do it. also replace the intake air sensor which is also at the back and under the blower. i want to move it because i know it gets heat soaked, but i also dont want to move it because after a second or 2 i reads like it should.
have all the wiring out with the exception of the O2 harness on the trans (will have to take the exhaust pipes off). i sure didnt think of having to do stuff like this when i put that blower on. what pita to remove lol.
i also found a surprise i didnt want to see...

i have no idea how or why oil is getting in there. i have no pcv system now so i dont know where ist coming from. more then likely i screwed up my vacuum lines and will have to re do them again. i still have to pull the console out, and punch a hole in the floor for the harnesses to go into. hopefully that will be tomorrow then i can start running some wires......and hopefully not fry anything or start the truck on fire!

is your oil filler tube still vented to the intake tube? could be some oil getting through that way

is your oil filler tube still vented to the intake tube? could be some oil getting through that way
i have the one from the oil filler tube, plus i have a gutted pcv in the other valve cover, both going to a puke tank with a air filter on top.

today got a little further. i pulled the seats, console and carpet out so i was able to get to the access panel in the floor. i cut 2 hole in it, then added a couple of body grommets into it for the wires to pass threw.
then the first hang up happen. i figured the trans harness would go in first because it was the easiest one. well, then went south in a hurry. the plug going to the neutral safety switch was different then the holley plug. lucky for me, i had the first 4r70 sitting under my bench which had the correct switch.

286241951_2142166665960451_7069095686066046869_n.jpg

i then put the trans harness in its place. i also figured i would run the power and ground harness as well because its 2 wires. then i ran out of light and called it a day. will have to see what tomorrow brings because it might rain.

very slick!!
I cannot believe you have the wrong DTRS/NSS wiring??? sheesh
I love the floor plugs that is a great way to do it!!

right? when i was running them to see how long everything was, i must have had it just hanging on the plug at first. then when i went to plug it in, i was messing with it for a few mins until i finally came to my senses and grabbed the ford harness to compare them to. at first it didnt compute, then i was like "oh, oh. i have a problem now". even called brent to see if i had the right one, and what would happen if i swapped the switches. he was also saying there were 2 of the oval plugs. one analog the other digital depending on the engineering number on the switch.
i also thought i would have plenty of room with the floor plugs, but the holley harness connectors are pretty big so pushing the engine side of things into the other plug will be fun.
its raining here today, so it looks like progress will be nill.......

Rain is the new normal

The 96-97.5 dtrs is analog
The 98+ is digital, it is easy to tell because the switch happened the same time as returnless fuel and pats

Rain is the new normal

The 96-97.5 dtrs is analog
The 98+ is digital, it is easy to tell because the switch happened the same time as returnless fuel and pats

The returnless fuel system began in 1999. Weren't all of the 97 DTRS(range sensors) analog, along with the external EGR?

Early 97 is still gt40 and analog
The switch to gt40p was 97.5+ Still analog

Then 98 went returnless, p heads external egr, pats, no more vss, and hard wired 4r70w solenoids this is when the dtrs and the rest of the systems went digital

So you are saying the 98-99 trucks had pats and all the other stuff but did not have the returnless rail until 99? That could be true I’m not sure I paid that close of attention to build dates
My bii was built with what I call the 97.5 pcm, gt40p no pats, soft solenoid wiring, analog dtrs and a vss
We could call it the 97.5-98 pcm inguess

We could call it the 97.5-98 pcm i guess I always have

In my mind there are 3 pcm
96
97.5
And 98-01

I should actually call it 99-01!! Lol you are right but I think some 98 build date trucks had returnless

so before this gets derailed

not much got done yesterday. i did a verification on my wire labels. glad i did, 2 were mislabeled and that was only in one plug. didnt get to the second one, eyes started to go buggy.
i also did a little wire separation. im not sure how they ship the fox body kits, but on the universal unterminated kits, then wrap both j1a and j1b harnesses together which makes labeling and identifying them a tad tuff.

btw, this was the harness from one plug

287934278_10158287425472513_8902882095278666511_n.jpg

and it now

287835780_10158287454647513_4878447394730858541_n.jpg

what also sucked was they tell you what wires go where, but in one plug they have 3 purple wires, 2 of them are side by side in the connector, and all of them go to difference places. one goes to the cam sensor, and one to the crank. ya dont want to screw those up, plus both are shielded, the only way i could figure it out easy was a volt meter. there are also 2 wires that are white with a black stipe.
ill check the other plug to make sure i labeled everything correctly sometime this week, or on the weekend, and start laying it out in the truck, then start on the coil and injector harnesses that 410Fortune made up and was kind enough to post in the ranger thread he is working on.

The chart I sent you shows which is cam and which is crank. I used a multimeter to make sure I got the correct purple wire also (from pin 1)

You got this!
