supercharged 5.0 true fire 98 explorer sport

the good news it, its all back together!.....and thats it for the good news. the bad news is......

she dont wanna start! when i first turned the key it made a few turns, then backfired threw the exhaust. i was like "WTF!". now its doing what you see now. what i am hoping is wrong with it is that i mixed either the firing order up, or have the coil plugs on the wrong coils. i did that (mixed up firing order) when i put the m90 on. the reason i say that is when you look at any picture online on how to put the plugs on, it shows you the stock location. they are hanging off the side of the supercharger, therefor both are turned and instead of the plug ins for the coils facing outward, they point down, and my brain may not have been functioning enough to get it right. or, i talked to Turdle earlier today and told him how i put the cam sensor in, and was telling me to do it with the cam tool, which i dont have right now. so with that said, if anyone thinks i might be wrong about the firing order, speak! i have called it a night, backs sore, and i was tired and hungry. it better run tomorrow, or those will be real flames on it!!!

I hope its the wires but damn if that didn't sound like 180° out issue! You sure your on tdc compression?

So your thinking the cam position sensor is 180 out?

Just from the video it sounds like a timing issue , I've had plug wires all mixed up before and it would still start , it would run like crap or maybe just fire and die , Its worth a look if the wires don't do it , they are easyer to check first, and I may just be hearing the charger

coils

The coil packs you have fire two cylinders at one time, if two wires were crossed there would be 4 cylinders out of time. You can see how this could cause no starts very easy. If the 2 primary wire connectors were crossed at the coils, all 4 would be out of time.

The cam sensor is only used for the fuel injectors (sequential). The ignition system(Coil Pack) doesn't care if you are TDC compression or exhaust since it supplies spark at both times due to 2 spark plugs and wires hooked up to each coil in the coil pack.
(vehicles with COP ignition systems use the cam sensor for spark and injectors)

What does all that mean, I don't know. lol.
My bet is on the coil wires or spark plug wires.

feeling defeated. tried switching coil wires, didnt help. so i rechecked my plug wires. didnt help. i am now going to have to pull the synco out and make sure that is set....and i cant do that until tuesday because nobody that is open here has the tool, and monday is the long weekend.......
oh well, that means i get to sit down and eat, and do some laundry so i have some clean dirty clothes

****.

In the video its that almost back spin sound at the beginning that sounds like for me anyway that the motor is out of time

Just a suggestion.
You might follow 2000streetrod's "engine no start" thread. Could be something simple-overlooked and this might point to it. Just a hunch.

I agree. Its going to be something simple, that isn't directly related to the rebuild. I'm 100% that the motor is built correctly. Could be the injectors not pulsing, could be almost anything ignition or fuel related.

Firing Order

This might come in handy so you can check to make sure you have the coil primary connectors plugged in correctly.

1998 5.0L
According to the wiring diagram, the coil primary connector with a wire that is DB/LG (Dark Blue/Light Green stripe), is for the coil with Cylinder number 1 on it. (Cylinders 1,6,3,5)

The other coil should have the coil primary connector with a wire that is PK/W (Pink/White stripe) on it.
(Cylinders 4,7,2,6)

Here is how it looked from the factory.

so, what was wrong you ask? two different things. i did have the coils backwards. thanks john for saying the primary had the blue wire, or i might still be there. then secondly (and this even made my buddy joe's head spin for 20mins because of the way they are placed) the secondary coil had the wrong firing order. we also pulled the cam sensor and double checked that, and it looked good (i am going to see if i can borrow one from the ford dealer in town here on tuesday and make sure its 100% however). when we tried starting it, it took a few turns to start however, then when it did start i had to nurse it a bit, then it cleared up. the lifters were clacking really loud. i did prime the motor, but i guess it still wasnt enough. that too quiet down, but is still louder then the stock ones. i sent a video to andy because he wanted to hear it when it started (sorry dude for waking you up) and he also said his is on the loud side as well.
but....there are some issues. i asked joe to hook up his scan tool, and it should a crap load of trans codes

my other buddy kurt wanted to know if it was running and i mentioned to him about the codes. i figured off the hop because brads truck was a 96, and evil is a 98 on of the connectors needed to be repinned (don, the one the was a ***** to connect to). so i looked into his ford cd and sent me this

no big thing, i will have to do that tomorrow. i also have a vacuum leak (has you can hear by what sounds like a whistle) on the passengers side and is causing a high idle (in that video it is idling around 1400-1500). i think its the egr valve, so i am going to look at that also. but the big hurdle is now over and just have to fix a few bugs.

Glad you got over the big hurdle.

Hate to hear about the vacuum leaks. I swear my goal this year will be to finally man up and buy a smoke pro. I am so sick of dealing with vacuum/exhaust leaks this past year that I could scream. Doing the little tricks, propane, cigar, or even making your own machine only works OK most of the time if that.

Thats awesome im glad I was wrong! Good luck with the tranny plug its a pita , sounds great cant wait for a burnout!

Awesome Tim! again one hell of a job as usual! That throttle response is wicked and it sounds incredible. I haven't been on here to see the updates until today so I've been reading thru this. After seeing the video i was deffinetly going to suggest the firing order was wrong but glad to hear you got it sorted out!

went back and repined the trans connector. got lucky, i was able to unhook the passengers exhaust, then get both hands around the top of the trans and pull the harness out of the truck. no more trans codes. i also fixed the big vacuum leak, it was my egr valve not sitting correctly.
started it up, and let it run for a bit, then drained the oil, rechecked all the fluids, then the moment of truth, and of course you have to take the first ride hoodless!

the first one is on the roll not letting it kick down at around 50kms or 30 mph. the second one was at a stand still, hitting it off idle, and getting off it around 5 grand......and a fubar'd drivers header gasket. she's got legs. the truck jumped up and lit all 4 and didnt stop till i got off the gas (look close enough on the second one, you can see me sawing at the wheel to keep it straight). sorry for the short video, my buddy joe went to hit the video button but flew backwards in his seat. then followed uncontrolled laughing from him because he could, but couldnt believe what it just did.
there is one other small vacuum leak i can hear. it will need tuning.....again....other then that, the truck feels night and tight. throttle response like you said josh is nuts. when i did look, it was making around 7-8 pound of boost, but it is cold out right now, but i also still have to put the meth kit in.
she's gonna be fun!!! :D

That thing even sounds different, deeper.
Sounds bad ass!
Watch out for all that power, it can come on real fast and get you sideways.
I pushed mine a little too hard on a wet road one day and starting going sideways, I usually don't get on it when it is wet. lol.
When it is all tuned and done you are going to be in for some fun. I was thinking you somehow were not expecting it to have as much power as it will.
Was any of that uncontrolled laughter coming from you? I know I would have had the same reaction. All that power just fills a guys heart with joy!

well if you listen real close the the final second of the last video, you will hear my reaction. that and i didnt notice how hard it pins you to the seat untill i got off it, and tried to move forward. the damn set belt almost strangled me!

This is the best! Well done Tim. I love it when a plan comes together.
I can hardly wait for you to take me for a burn. Kind of a before and after impression.
