supercharged 5.0 true fire 98 explorer sport

hi everyone, my name is tim . i live in selkirk, manitoba, canada and as if this date that i am posting this, i am 36 years old.

i bought my sport in jan 05 from a local ford dealer. it had 111,000KM's on it. this is the second sport i have owned. it was sitting on the lot for about 8 months before i came along. i am the third owner (i was able to track down the person that traded it in, and they got it from a friend, who bought it new in 98).

i started to do a few things to it after i first got it, then i found this site, and all hell broke lose! i've never been satisfied with something the everyone else has, so i started to tinker with it even more.

is the feature truck on the fun hump day radio show (starts roughly around the 30 min mark)

http://explorerforum.podbean.com/2011/03/23/19-vroom-zoomboom/

and you drive 26 hours ONE WAY to the carlisle all ford nationals in june 2010 and 2011, and grab second place in the s.u.v. all category!

scan00012.jpg

then in 2014 you go back to the same show you have been to 5 years in a row (nothing by most, but its one hell of a long drive) and take first!

Throttle body

The advantage is the TPS is a better design, and if you get the Cobra one working you can replace it with a larger single blade design for more airflow into the engine.

the throttle body thats on there is a 75mm accufab. i think the tps is a steaming pile of junk however (bbk). i also dig threw some old threads that were saying to put a 95 mustang cobra tps on it, and it must be from a cobra. however, when i call my parts store, ford and look on rock auto, the one for a regular gt is the same as a 351, so kinda confused here....

What connector does that TPS come with, it is like the Explorers TPS we have, with no wire pigtail?

What is the opening size of those oval TB's, say 6"x4", that is, the piping size needed? I'm wondering about space, the 75-90mm TB's will take about a 4" round pipe well. The 90mm size should be a minimum for a boosted engine.

Let me know if you find anything that will work with the Fox TB's. I couldn't find anything when I worked on my 75mm Accufab. I ended up modifying the stock 98 302 TPS, and it uses different bolts I bought from a hardware store(not that great). I didn't want the Fox TPS with its wire pigtail. I looked at quite a few TPS's from the 90's Fords, nothing I saw fit the Fox TB. I'm going to be using the TB for my NA 347, so anything that will bolt on easier would be nice.

its a round throttle body i have. the outside is about 3 3/4, inside is 3. there is a bbk tps on it right now that had a 3 wire fox style (and 96-97 explorer) end on it, that i cut off. at first i had a trailer light plug on it and found it got mushy and would make the voltage freak out. i now have a male/female end from a O2 sensor that clips together on it. i noticed just before winter that the rpms would surge if i was on the highway, and my idol became erratic when in gear and with my foot on the brake. the voltage was set closed at 1.04 volts, cant remember what it was at wot

The Cobra "terminator" TPS is like the 1998 - ? 4.0 SOHC TPS with no wire.
I for get the piping size, I have had so many different ones they just blend together now.
I think I have 4 inch sewer pipe coupler on my Lightning Throttlebody, the inside diameter would have to be 4.5 inches since the plastic sewer pipe is 4 inches inside and about 1/4 inch thick. If that makes sense. I think the Cobra is the same size.

I'll try to make one of those work. I won't have the EGR or elbow to deal with, so I can place the TB as needed in that space next to the AC box, pointed at the air cleaner and MAF.

Are there any easy to come by air inlet pipes like OEM for the oval TB's, which turn into a round pipe etc? My MAF will be the round 95mm SCT type most likely, so the pipe there would be close to 4" if it fits with the radiator hose there.

wanted to do a datalog today and see if me messing with the tps changed anything. the funny thing was i needed gas, and there is a station just down my street. as i was going there i see a lifted 2nd gen sport turn and go the same direction. he turns into the station and i walk up to him and he says "hey, your on ef right?" small world. my town has maybe 10,000 people and i bump into another member at a gas station in the middle of winter when most people think i park my truck! lol forgot to get his screen name (have seen him on here just cant remember his name). so i head out to do the log. i nail it from a stand still (in 4x4) and it shoots all over the highway, then hooks at motors off.....then it happens.....
did you know antifreeze when spewing out of a motor looks like smoke in the rear view mirror when its -20C? chucked another block heater out again. this is making me a tad frustrated. i looked into a few electric pumps because i do believe the problem is having that larger crank pulley is causing too much or higher flow. i think. the problem with having a electric water pump is i dont know what the life is on one, and i cant run a belt around it. it has to be on one side or another.

You can get electric water pumps with an idler pulley in place of what used to be the drive pulley.
Nothing is cheap.
I think your right on about the water pump being over driven pushing out that plug. Its adding to the issue, for sure.

it was nice out today (well, for up here in winter that is). pulled the block heater out again. i noticed that the bottom of it was pushed out, so i am going to try something different.

the top part is what comes with these heaters to lock them in if you have never seen one. i cut a chunk of (i think) 16 gauge stainless steel, and threaded it for a stainless steel bolt. i am thinking the flimsy wing nut thing they come with isnt strong enough to hold them in place and hope that this will fix it once and for all. was a little work to get it in the block but i got it in. time will tell if this fixes it or not.

So far so good?

Dont know if its been mentioned but why not try a lower psi radiator cap??even with a stock one i would think it would let the pressure release before it blows out a block heater of freeze plug

block heater

Should go to a screw in and be done with it.
Some ford cars used this one, maybe he can adapt it to work for the 5.0
F5RZ-6A051-B

andy, havent driven it really yet. its been to warm out up here (so everything is sloppy) and havent had the time. bought a new cash cow (02 sport) and just finished cleaning it and fixing all the problems it had this weekend.
jd, i put a 13lb on it. stock is 16. that was the lowest i could find for the size of the opening.
john, i cant got screw in. the block isnt machined for it. besides, i thinking that the block heaters from ford might be different, i called the dealer in town. they wanted $90!!!! and its the same thing that i am using now, only with a ford part number. a buddy of mine had said he has a heater, but in one of his heater core lines. i will have to look into it when i get time. or if my parts store can find one.

This may be stupid but why do you even need a block heater??yes i know where you live.haha

weeeell....because i have no garage she sits outside all the time. when it snows, i have to start it and move it to do my snow blowing. if i need to do any dataloging, gotta start it. want to go for a zoom around (yes, i still drive it in the winter sometimes when everything is firmed up and not sloppy) gotta start it. or like today when one tire looks like its going flat, and i cant get to that side because its up against a fence so i haft to start it and move it to take it off. that and is has been as cold as -50C with the wind here (and was like that for almost 3 weeks 2 winters ago) (or -58F).
defiantly not speedo weather.....

O damn,so i assume it stays plugged in always ? Even with it plugged in i bet that oil is THICK!!

other then about a week ago i havent driven it much (and that ride was a tad hair raising by nailing the throttle, having it claw for traction in 4x4 then lifting and realizing i hit 110kms a hour or around 70mph starting to go sideways....on a busy street....near a cop shop, whoops!) i still cant say for sure my little block heater mod is working or not.
however tonight i did make a new hair pulling experience for myself, or bought one finally. this summers tuning experience has left a sower taste in my mouth with ANYONE local. that and the lack of remote tuners out there that will want to go near a explorer, i made the plunge and now have a sct pro racer page coming. dono bought one for his truck a few weeks back, and has had nothing but good to say about it. with his and my truck being very close in more ways then one (other then him being turbo'd and mine supercharged). he has offered to help out anyway he can. that and i am hoping 4point wont mind giving a helping hand as well. i also was talking to don and had said for the amount of money we both have spent on remote tuning, we should have done this in the first place. both of us have changed so much on both our trucks, by the time we get things sorted out with the tunes we have had, we have ended up changing something and had to get a retune done, so in the long run, this will be cheaper and better because we are in control of everything, and we can feel if something is going good or not working at all instead of relying on someone that can only read whats on their computer screen.
now the bad news about this is i had to dive into my carlisle money. but the way i am also looking at it is, if the truck isnt tuned, i wont drive it that far and be worried. i am hoping i can sell the cash cow i have in the driveway soon, so i can put that money back where i got it from. still hopeful on getting down there this summer, but cant and wont say for sure just yet.
stay tuned for all the "fun" i will be having tuning this....thing.
