My friend has a 95 Ranger 5 speed with a 4 cylinder under the hood. He is 5" in the air with 33's and very low gearing (around 3.07), so he has a hard time turning over the tires. He has been talking about swaping his 4 banger for a 4.0L ranger/explorer engine (91-94). Would new engine mounts be needed? How about tranny? Let me know if anyone has done this swap... and anything that could be useful to me...

Thanks a lot,
Chris

Dude, 3.07's with a 4 banger? Check your codes again, that would totally suck. I would guess 4.10's, or at least that is what my buddy with a 92 with the 2.9 has, he swapped up to 4.56's and runs 32's no prob. Only reason I say this is because most 4 bangers (jeeps, etc) use a lower gear when having a 4 cylinder to make things a little better.
Double check, but a 5.0 or a 4.0 would be cool if the gears were already like 4.10s or so.

Before he goes to the trouble to swap to the 4.0 he needs to change his gears. Once he does that to compensate for the lack of engine then see if he still wants to swap. If he does the only way it would be cost effective to swap a 4.0 would be if you got it at a really really good price, otherwise for the labor you will put into it you might as well toss a 5.0 in.

Thanks for the info... i'm not sure about his gears but that is what he thinks he has.... i mean i drive it every now and again and when i say it is slow i mean it is slow. I have the worst time trying to start out in first, not to mention that he has no clutch left. If he deciedes to swap the new engine in would a 4.0 be compadable with his tranny, ecu, etc? I know the 5.0 wouldn't...

thanks
chris

Well his clutch is gone cause he has to roast it just to get started. That will not change with no matter what motor he gets. He needs to change out the gears! I am not sure if his tranny will be compatible with the 4.0 what tranny is it? The mazda 5 speed? It should be but if he has to swap I still say it will probably be cheaper in the end to swap it all. Sell his old stuff and it will lessen the dollar load even more.

I wish! My 4.0 swap in to a 1990 ranger that originally had a 2.9L cost me only $1200!

My 5.0L V8 Conversion will cost me 2-3K, for most people though, it will cost over $5,000+ easy!

go 5.0 no doubt if you go to the trouble once man...

i'm betting on 4.10's because my friend has a 4banger/5-speed ranger with 4.10's and like no other options. he can whoop the **** out of me too in a race i've heard him get a THIRD gear scratch from that beast!!!
