I know that i can swap out lights from a '97/98 X to my '96...and have been wanting to do it for a long time now. However, just recently i've become frustrated with the door/window release lever on my X and started looking into doing a swap. Is this a perfect swap?

The hatch from 95-97 and 98-01 are quite different. The later models have a more rounded hatch opposed to the earlier ones with a pretty much flat one. I know for one those lights will stick out some on the swap, not exactly sure on the hatch swap, but I'd be wiery about it. Doesn't look like a perfect swap.

97 started the new trunk bodystyle, right? The 95 and 96's have the flat trunk with the twist-to-open door/window with the license plate mounted in the bumper, as opposed to the 97+ that had the plate integrated into trunk with a handle recessed into a molding for a trunk release.

New door design is 98 forward.

I have a 97 Eddie V8. The rear latch twist to open & the license plate is on the rear bumper. I think the new body style started on later models.

The front ends are the same (pretty much) 95-98, but the 95-97 rear is different on the 98 and up.....

The lights will fit on with some minor work but will stick out. Still not worth it though.

You can swap the whole rear hatch from a 98+. There was one on ebay a while back with the conversion. Be sure to swap to the newer bumper too because it will look kinda dumb with two liscence plate holders.
