Hey Guys and Gals,

I am wondering if I should switch to synthetic (mobil 1) because I'm plannin' on having this one along time?

Here the info:

1998 SOHC Sport
37K
Dealer serviced since birth
Oil Change every 2500/2800miles

Should I change over?
Would it be wise/unwise at this stage (given miles)

Thanks ToneDog

PS, I had a '91 sport before this one and changed the oil every 2500 miles, pampered "her" better than my girlfriends and sold her at 160k knockin' like hell especially during startup. :-(

Not looking for the same outcome!

I would say YES.

I have Mobil 1 0w30 in my '00 sohc, Mobil 1 ATF and Mobil 1 in the rear end.

I love it, better mileage, and I am certain better protection. I have had no problems whatsoever.

I highly recomment synthetics.

Good luck.....

yes

Definitely. Many people claim there are problems with atarting synthetics on an older engine. I've switched over to synthetics on several of my cars and never have I had a problem. It's worth it.

YES, I have it in all of my vehicles including my explorer and it does make a difference. Especially on protection of the motor.

since your truck is low miles i say go for it... i have QS 4x4 in mine and i love it......

i'll agree with everyone else. i started using synthetic in my explorer @ 130,000 miles. never had a problem.

PERFECT TIMING ON THIS TOPIC. I WAS GOING TO ASK THE SAME QUESTION AS SOON AS I SIGNED ON THIS MORNING. I HAVE 104K ON MY '94. WAS THINKING OF CHANGING TO SYNTHETICS. WHO SAYS YES AND WHO SAYS NO?

Yes!!! Amsoil synthetics are the best in my opinion. quality and durability

MGV366: Definitely switch to synthetics. Like I said before, you shouldn't have any problems with switching over. I think that those that had problems, probably had a problem with the engine before switching. It's worth it. I prefer Mobil 1 synthetics myself.

I was told though if you have the slightest leak....not to switch. Is that correct??

It depends who you ask. I say if you have a leak, slight or not, fix it. Then you can switch to anything you want.

I concur; there is simply no reason to have any leak. Fix it.....

Go for it!

I switched at 75K miles on my truck.

When I blew up the motor by hydrolcoking it, the mechanic said my engine looked nearly brand new inside.

Well, WOW!

That says it all, 13 posts all say YES, What better confirmation do I need !

Thanks Guys,
Tonedog

All Synthetic here...
0W30 in crankcase (Mobil 1)
ATF synthetic in power steering, transfer case, and manual transmission (Mobil 1)
75W140 Synthetic (Motocraft) in rear end.

done since 50 miles

97 Explorer Sport 4.0 OHV

another YES... I changed to Mobil 1 on a 97 Sport with 33,000. You might want to change the oil filter when you have 1,000 or 2,000 miles on with synthetic. What I've read is on engines that had dino oil, the change to synthetic starts to clean out the engine and you can get alot of gunk moving around in "the beginning". I did a filter change @ 1,500 and new oil & filter again @ 4,000 on Mobil 1. No problems and that was 3 years ago. Also have Redline in the diff's, manual gearbox and Xfer case.
