Synthetic Should I or Shouldn't I

2 changes

if you have a high mileage engine and change from dino oil to synthetic, a filter only change at 1,500 miles and then do a complete oil & filter change when you have about 3,000 miles on it. (that's what I did ....)

SEE JUST TO PROVE HOW BAD I AM AT UNFERSTANDING THIS STUFF...I DIN'T KNOW THAT YOU COULD CHANGE THE FILTER WITHOUT CHANGING THE OIL!!!

Uhhhh, how the heck do you change the filter ONLY?

Just remove the filter, clean the area, replace with a new filter, and add back the lost oil (usually around 1 quart)

I guess that's easier to do on a lift. When I'm on my back in the driveway, there's no way I'd be able to get the old filter off and put a new one on quick enough without dumping oil all over the place. I think I'd rather wait the additional 1,500 miles and change everything at once.

The only oil that comes out is whats in the filter. All the engine oil doesn't come out....not unless you change your oil with your engine running.

These filters are simple to change even in a driveway.

An old trick is to put a gallon size zip lock bag around the filter ( after you loosen it ) and simply unscrew by hand; not a drop of oil is spilled.

Put a new one on and you are in business. Should take less than 5 min.

Good luck.....

I like Al's approach. I used to take a 16 common nail and punch a hole in the center of the filter, let it drain for a minute or two and then remove it. No oil comes pouring over the sides. Just be sure to use a good oil filter as well. Mobil 1, Purolator or Amsoil are the known best.

Don't forget the K&N oil filter. It is great also. Truckperformance has them for bout $8.
