I picked up my 1998 ford explorer XLt with auto four wheel drive t case, about three months ago. After i picked it up i noticed if i accelerated really fast there would be a loud popping noise in the front end(while im in auto 4 wheel),(i dont know if it popped in 4x4 high) it sounds like somthing that binds up and pops repeaditly. When the shift motor went out i pulled it off and manually shifted the truck back into high. I left the shift motor disconnected and now the truck doesnt pop at all on acceleration. (i believe that the shift motor completes the circut that allows the hubs to lock in but i dont know.) Anyway with the shift motor being disconnected does that disable the t case completely? and if it does would that be signs of the t case going out or would the popping noise be a result of the shift motor going out?
[E] There is a decent amount of play in the rear driveshaft
*the shift motor was completely ceased when i pulled it off
Unrelated:
any way to make the truck always run in 2wd? no auto
