take off 4 wheel drive engagement motor for good?

Can I take off the 4 wheel drive engagement motor off my 1993 explorer and manually shift into four wheel drive with a wrench. Is this a stupid idea?

I've had mine off for years. I took the splined wheel that goes between the shift motor and the T-case shift :nub" and keep it in the cupholder. When I need 4x4, I grab the wheel, hop under the truck, slip the wheel onto the nub and shift to 4H or 4Lo, get back in and return the wheel to the cupholder.

Not as convenient as that nice $300 shifter, but my way is free!
