the stock thermostat is a dummy gauge. It really only reads three things, cold, middle, and hot. So as long as it's not going to the extreme range I say you're fine, if you want you could also install an aftermarket temperature gauge to have a true reading.

sounds like the thermo is stuck. You'll want to change it before winter if want a hot heater.

The temp gauge is not a "switch" gauge that only reads cold, middle or hot. It should move as the engine warms. It's the oil gauge that Josh is referring to that only reads low, middle and high.

My temp gauge moves as it warm's up. My thermo was stuck a few weeks ago and it would only move up just by the C. Changed the thermo and it fixed the problem.

Oh and it's a cheap easy fix. It only took me about 15 minute's to change it. The thermostat housing is in the front of the motor under the air intake. Cant miss it. Hope this help's.

my truck is the same way. never gets anywhere near the opperating temp on the gauge. but i get heat from the heater very well, and the engine is getting hot for sure. ive just blown it off as another ****ty ford problem. lol

so... i'm sort of confused...

I have the same problem, gets to right around the "C" and never much warmer, but my heater is blowing heat!

Are you saying that a thermostat will fix this? I guess I don't see how the thermostat will fix the temperature gauge... But I guess I'll have to take you guys at your word. I'm new to the whole ford world here!

A thermostat will not "fix" the temperature gauge. The original poster gabeg420 indicated the gauge read low, but failed to indicate if the heater kicked out ample heat. If the thermostat reads "Cold" (after the engine has been running for 10 min) and the heater doesn't kick out ample heat the thermostat is most likely stuck in the open position. This will cause the coolant to be continuously cooled. If you have lots of heat then the problem lies in the wiring, sensor, or gauge... Make sure the wires in the engine bay are not covered in oil, grease, or crud which could cause this..

Got it! Thanks for clarifying.

My heat blows hot, so I'm assuming its the gauge temperature sensor or the wires leading to/from it.

one way to rule out the guage is to take the wire that goes on the sending unit and ground it out ( key off) then go inside turn the key on and if the guage goes to it's fullest mark then the sending unit is bad .

mine useally reads " o " all the time(maybe just past it in summer weather) but when it's cold or the the heater is going full blast it will drop down to "n"

I grounded that wire, and all the sudden my engine was running too hot.

Any suggestions?

Ok, that was a horrible joke.

But, it did go to the "H", so I know the gauge itself is working.

Next up, replace the sensor, right!?

yes...like a $5 part...replaced mine, one thing you "could " try is the connector that goes on top of the sensor ...get some needle nose pliers and tighten the gripper part of the connector and see if it makes better contact on the temp sensor...mine was shot so i had to replace the connector with a new one but the sensor was still bad and had to be replaced .

when replaceing it take the cap off the radiator or the top hose and bleed a little coolant off so when you un-do the sensor you wont have a lot of coolant in that section that your working on ...plus after the new sensor is wrapped in teflon tape it makes it better to install the new one with out coolant getting all over the tape and mucking it up and possibly falling off the threads .

well thanks again guys I just logged in to ask this same very question and you already answered it for me! But where is the temp sensor located?

It's right on the thermostat housing, located underneath the throttle body, front, center of engine. The easiest way to find the thermostat housing is to follow the upper radiator house that comes out of the left side of the radiator on top to the housing into the engine. Once you find that, the temperature gauge sensor is the one on the left of the two. It's the smaller one, with only one wire coming out if it.

Hi everyone.I'm going to try and ask a question. I'm deep into changing out all the heater stuff on my 2000 Mazda b2500 with2.5L engine.I'm at the heater control valve, got my new one but? I made a drawing of all the heater hoses but left out some details. Got a parts diagram from dealer and noticed that the hose from the bottom radiator T and the hose from the thermostat housing are opposite of my drawing? Somebody is wrong here, I know, don't say it, and all I have to go on is an arrow stamped on one prominent hose fitting on the valve. Can anyone tell me which hose goes to it? How about a check on the heater core hoses, I'm on a roll here, those are wrong also I'll bet.And to think, this all started with a crack in the radiator. Then it just got out of hand. Somebody please stop me. Hope this is getting posted.
