WHAT????

Sorry, but someone needs to translate that! :D

The 4.0 OHV motor is a decent motor.. Don't overheat it and the heads will last.

The problem area is lower intake (leak), cracking heads (when overheated) and lifter noise.

I have 320k miles on our '92. I don't remember hearing of many blown 4.0 OHV motors.. usually its transmissions, and heads you hear about.

289,000 - 160.690 = 119,310 miles left.

No seriously if you take care of it the OHV will run forever.
it may burn some oil and lose some compression after 250K miles, but they can go forever.

As Maniak said, the weak point on the Gen I Explorers is the auto trans. As long as that's still working, just change the oil regularly and keep on driving.

Translation for Rick!

FordExplorer87 has a 1992 Eddie Bauer Explorer with 160,690 highway miles on it. His cousin has a 1991 Explorer(model not specified) with 289,000 city miles on it.

His question is how many miles can his engine potentially last?

Oh yes don't forget the :exporanges

Lookup a very long post called "high milage explorers" (might be mileage, either is correct).

Someone said they have one with over 400k miles

The 4.0 is one of the best v6's ford has made like you said dont overheat it and take care of it and it will do just fine. The rear end is out in mine right now that and the transmission are the thing you gotta watch out for. Fords are known for tranny failure.

yeah my GT has like 157k miles. I don't think its had good maintenance by previous owners and it uses maybe 1.5 quarts per 2800 mile oil change. But who cares? I paid $300 for a running, driving truck :p

my 91 has about 263K miles on it, and while I do have lifter noise(I actually think it's the pushrods, but the sound is the same), it's still running strong. As has been stated, as long as you keep up with the general maintenence, it should last you for a VERY long time.

Just hearing these kinds of things about Explorers makes me that much happier with my Old/Young Ex
Translation 1994 Limited w/just over 64K miles

Welcome to the forums Patriot!, I'm fairly new myself.....Gotta tell ya,there is alot of great info here and great folks willing to share that info

162,000 and the only problems are the lifter noises, and it burns about a quart every 2k miles.

Remember, how long a motor and tranny last is extremely dependent on how it was driven and cared for. If you get one that did a lot of towing, it might not last as long. One that was driven hard by a leadfoot such as myself might not either.
One other thing that can effect motor life is maintnance. If a prior owner only changed the oil ever 10k, it surely won't last as long.

I smell a "Tis the season............"post ;)

Oh come on your from Chicago you should understand that :p

That's not Chicago speak, that's "Hangover Park" speak :D

bout 139 000KM on mine :)

im 21 in march I got my X at age 15. LOTS OF HARD MILES. I floored it every where i went. I jumped railroad track evry other day. I was about as hard as one can get on a motor. In the end a rollover killed my X. For the love of them i rebuilt the entire suv (with the exclusion of the body) (i jsut replaced that) the motor still runs. 130,000 miles small oil leak and 2 trannys. I still got an extra one tho. My brother drives a toyota and it starting to have some serious prob outta his (170,000 miles) easy highway miles.
