So I thought I'd share my recent experience with my 1997 5.0 Explorer. About 3 months ago I pulled into a parking lot, turned off the ex, came back out 5 minutes later and started it. It started missing and stumbling really badly. So I ran the codes and found I had a P0301 (Cylinder 1 misfire) code. So I started with the basics, check the wire, plug, injector. Nothing worked. I replaced both upper and lower intake gaskets, which were in great condition, which didn't make a difference.
Defeated, today I thought I would check all of the plug wires just to make sure. Low and behold #7 wire wasn't reading any resistance. I replaced the wire and problem went away.
The odd thing about this is that the code reader/computer was sending me to Cyl #1 ...not #7 . Anyone else run into this? This is NOT the original engine. The original burnt up a piston pretty bad, which took out the crank and everything else in the oil path. This is a 89 GT hipo motor. Is there any reason why the computer would get those cylinders mixed up and give a false reading?
I am extremely happy the problem was fixed! So if your struggling with the same issue, this may be helpful....
Cheers,
Chad
