I often get questions about particular aspects of automatic transmissions. Sometime those questions make me research and further my knowledge as well. So many times my answers incorporate a absolutely fantastic website which has the very best explaination of how an automatic transmission works in theory, so I point folks to it. I had a chance to do that once again and as I re-read that site's information, I wished more people could read it.... well, I decided to give folks that chance in this post and make it a sticky, for a while.

Here is a part of a reply I recently did and that link to that site:

"....go to http://auto.howstuffworks.com/automatic-transmission.htm and read up on auto transmission operation (a great site and a good explainations.) Bands and clutches are the things that make planetary gearsets work like they should... holding the "stationary" parts stationary when they need to be. The automatic transmission is all about planetary gearsets. That site will help explain it. When in the little animation you see a part held "stationary" think that it is either a band or a clutch making it so.

After you read it if you think there is something I can explain better, or if you still have Q's let me know. I solicit your ideas and ideas from others of threads on auto trannies that would be helpful."

And in that vein as folks read up on this, if I can provide more information here on A/T's that helps you, please let me know and I will try to provide it and when I do not know I will say so, and try and find out, for us both [within limits.]

One of those was new to me.... thanks Brooklyn Bay.. you are the first official recipient of the Glacier Mousepad award.....send me in a PM your address and I will send you a mousepad.

Everyone else... if you carefully read and understand those three sites information, (It takes many readings and careful attention I admit) you will be way far away into understanding the things we talk about here, and into knowing why things give us the fits they do!

I have another site that has information on the CVT transmission:http://cvt.com.sapo.pt/. I'm honored to have won that mouse pad award. I didn't know that this post had a contest for useful information. Glacier, I just sent you my information in a PM. Thanks!

Great post Glacier as always. I've been to the HSWs website before on the transmission and have learned a thing or two in some classes - but you are the transmission genious. Great work as always

I have been fascinated with the CVT...to the point I have my eyes out to acquire one out of a FORD 500 (wrecked) to take apart and rebuild just to better understand it. So, in that vein, if anyone comes across a wrecked 500 where I might get the tranny reasonably cheap, please let me know. [Just think if I succeed I may have the very first CVT Diary on the planet!]
