My 94 Ex's hubs are shot - When i try to engage 4wd i hear a clicking/grinding noise from the left front wheel.

I have been searching this forum for an easy solution and have not been able to find one - I either replace the hubs with new autos or manuals - both are pretty expensive.

It seems that people have heard of a rebuild kit but no one really knows where to get one. A friend sent me this link:
http://www.parts.com/partlocator/in...&make=10&model=Explorer&year=1994&catalogid=1

Look at the 3rd item down: LOCKING HUB CONTROL, Explorer, Auto Hub, Repair Kit - 4WD for $22

Seems too good to be true...

Does anyone know what these are or if they work? I emailed the website but got nothing back yet.

hub repair kit

I have a 94 Limited I bought with 69k on it. It now has 125K and in the last 3 years I have only used 4wd about a dozen times. Last week we had 8" of snow in Seattle and I was disapointed to find out my hubs weren't engaging, sooo I went out and bought a set of Warn manual hubs and associated spindle kit to install tonight. I was in a hurry so I paid about $50 more than I should ($230).

BTW I think I bought the last set in Western Washington, none of the wharehouses have any, ther are back-ordered from Warn and every store I called called me back and said the wharehouse just laughed at them, ( I called about 20 stores)

Not that I am rich but I am going to order a couple of these kits just to see what is in them. I'll take pictures when they come and see if I can figure out how to post them.

Ford syas there isn't a rebuild kit and the new auto hubs are redesigned but for $324 ea, I'm not going to find out. $46 is worth checking.

Broken auto hub cam

I took my hubs apart tonight and found out that the reason one hub was clicking and not engaging was because the cam was broken. The plastic piece had a crack through it.

Does any one have a cam out of a 91- 94 explorer auto hub they can sell me? please email me: dave@dpom.net

BTW the hub rebuild kit i ordered from fordpartsnetwork.com contained two metallic "4x4" stickers for the hub body and two rubber gaskets. Wasn't exactly the rebuild kit i had pictured.

Can't you buy the cam at an auto parts store?

You can buy bearings, races, seals, etc. so why not that specific part..

Not available

You can't even get them from Ford. They changed the design, now you ahve to buy the entire flange assembly.

dpom, you have an E Mail.
