CHICAGO — Ford Motor Co. says building the next generation of the Ford Explorer SUV will bring 1,200 new jobs to its Chicago assembly plant and a nearby stamping plant.

The new work means a second shift at the assembly plant on the city's far South Side.

Gov. Pat Quinn and Ford officials are at the plant for Tuesday's announcement.

Ford says it's investing $400 million in its Chicago manufacturing facilities to make the more fuel efficient Explorer.

Quinn has touted the new jobs as he tries to make his case to voters ahead of the Feb. 2 Democratic primary. He faces Illinois Comptroller Dan Hynes.
