Are you saying the axle shaft just slid right out? Then yes someone has taken the carrier out more then likely because you have remove the c clips before the shafts slide out on the 8.8 axle.

Terminology is off.. 8.8s don't have a 3rd member. A 3rd member is a removable carrier like on a Ford 9" axle.

I would assume hes talking about the d35 TTB, which does have a 3rd member. One side will just slide out, the drivers side. The passanger side will slide out to a point, then there is a c clip that must be removed from the inside of the pumpkin.

with all that said and done. I have the stock parts as far as that goes. and my question was what must i do to get the driver side axle free?

if i am going to pull the differential cover then i am going to replace the third member as well as the cover. so.......

Kdogg your terminology is misleading.

the drivers side axle shaft on the Dana 35 TTB (front end) will pull directly out of the differential.
So all you have to do is take the knuckle down to the spindle and then remove the spindle.

on the passenger side you can remove the outer axle shaft in the same manner, but the inner stub shaft is held intot he differential carrier with a C clip. So you cannot get the inner setub shaft out without seperating the differential from the drivers side beam.

there is no such thing as a differential cover on this front end.

If you are talking about the rear 8.8 then you can pull the cover and remove the C clips, then the axle shafts for the rear will pull out.

What are you talking about?
On these trucks the only differential is attached to the beam on the front end, the 8.8 rear axle is all one piece, center section and tubes.

You need to be clear which axle you are talking about. Are you talking about the Rear axle (A ford 8.8" that has no 3rd member) or the front axle (if 4wd d35 TTB with 3rd member. The difference is a 3rd member contains the pinion and carrier/ring gear in once nice little package that you can carry around with you and swap out as you please. An axle with no 3rd member has a removable differental cover that gives you access to the housing in which the gears are installed in. This you gives you access to the gears and cannot remove the gears/housing without significant work.

3rd members dont have a differental cover, they have whatevery they mount to. D35 mounts to passanger side beam, 9" mounts into rest of axle housing as the case with a toyota type 3rd member. And when you talk about replacing the 3rd member, what are you talkiing about? The entire third with gears and all??? Why? And why replace the cover??? And what the hell is going on here??? Stock parts??? AHHHHH :D

Please post pics if you can, or at least be clear about which axle you are working with and what exactly the problem is and we can definatly help you.

bring a BIG crow bar if you plan on removing that third member (TTB)

200k miles on factory silicone is a BYOTCH to pry off. once its off that c-clip is a breeze to pull out, you can do it with your fingers, or a flathead if its a lil snug

im curious however, the bolt on the drivers side that holds the pumpkin on as well, what is the best way to get that off? I had to take off the coil buckets and everything to get a wrench on it.

take coil off and whatnot. Grind a knotch in the radius arm so the bolt has enough room to slip in and out. Otherwise you can cut it off. But it does have a reason for being there, so you will need to replace it if you do cut it.

good call on the notch, im gonna have to do that.
