I had a '99 Explorer Sport until I rolled it over the weekend. I am not looking for a new Explorer to take it's place. I have found a 2003 Explorer XLT at a used car lot that I may be interested in. It has 60,000 miles, V8, and 3rd row seating. The Explorer seems to be very clean. They are asking $14,900.

Here are my questions:

1. What do you think is a good price to pay for this vehicle (given the limited info. that I gave)?

2. Would you be concerned with the high mileage on the vehicle?

Also, are the 2003 models that much of an improvement over the 2002? I keep reading about tranny and rearend problems with the 02's.

Thanks,

Chris

theres many issues from 02-05 tranny problems and rear ends. I have an 02 Mountaineer that has had 2 trannys in it now with 41K on it.

As long as you get a powertrain warranty just to be safe if anything does happen if you get the 03 Explorer, you should be good and love that ride!

That price seems pretty good for that year and miles, but is there a way to go look back on the history of that 03 Explorer to see what problems if any it has had?

So the tranny and rearend problems are not limited to the 02 models?

Thanks,

Chris

A family member of mine has an 05 Explorer XLT v-8. She's on her 2nd trans already with 23K on it. I have never had a rear end go bad on mine, nor anyone else I know (knock on wood) so the only thing I dislike about these trucks is the crappy trans they put in them.

I have an '03 v-8 with 48k on it and after reading above I feel lucky that I'm on my first tranny! I love mine and think the price you are getting seems fair according www.kkb.com
I would see if the seller would go lower anyway.Check to see that all recalls/tsb's have been done. Look at www.alldata.com for those. Maybe a carfax report. Who knows if they(carfax) are any good. I would also be leery of anything that has come out of the south with all the huricane rebuilds out there. All I know is that my neighbor who is a car dealer says he can buy SUVs for 3-4k under book price due to gas/economy.
