I was traveling and I developed a ticking noise in the right rear tire I believe and then it developed into a grinding noise and the rear end swings at times. Also, I've had problems with the four wheel drive engaging.

It's a 2002 Ford Explorer XLS with 130,000 miles. I'm not much of a mechanic, what is the problem and what do you think it would cost? Should I put the money into it? Your assistance would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Rick

Welcome to this forum! I've moved your thread to the stock 2002-2005 section. You might have two problems (rear differential & the transfer case).

IIRC, the rear coils on the 3rd gen X's break pretty often. Not sure if it would contribute to your problems, but i'd check them anyways.

Hello i am new to this deal. I have a no fuel pressure issues i need to deal with ASAP
on a 1997 AWD 5.0 250K

Mine was doing something similar last week. When driving on the interstate, I noticed a grind and occasional squeak in the passenger rear. It seemed as though the rear end was loose and would side when I would change lanes. I pulled over and noticed the bearings/hub assembly was shot. I could actually see metal shavings and smell the metal.

It's at ford now and looking about 1.5-2k as it seized up and damaged some other rear end parts. I would say take it to ford and pay the $89 for the dx.

what they doing for that much, bearing itself with a hub is like $50
Can't think of what would be affected by it . . .

Its the ford dealership so they will only replace the hub assembly as a whole. I don't have the paperwork yet, but I was just told axle shaft, knuckle, hubs, upper control arm, new rotors and ebrake shoes.

I was pretty much stuck into getting them to fix it and they wouldn't complete it without replacing the ebrake shoes and rotors. I could have saved a hundred or so doing them myself.

The biggest issue was the passenger hub and the axle. The rest was just worn out. At least I dont have to skin my knuckles trying to tackle the other rear hub.
