Just boughtmy first Ford explorer 1997 and I'm already off to a rocky start. Turns out my ford explorer has a bad timing chain and would like to know if what would be better to fix it or get a new engine?? And if a new engine is the way to go then what type would be compatible with my 1997 ford explorer 4.0 v6 two wheel drive. But if fixing it is better of what exactly do I replace. Completelyrics clueless!

Get a engine from a wreck. Newer the better. Any 4.0lSOHC will fit, Explorer, Sport Trac, Mustang, Ranger and Land Rover. Lower mileage the better. Pop the valve covers before you pay and make sure the guides arent pooched on the replacement. You will need to swap exhaust, intake and Sensors from yours to the replacement.

Welcome.
