I own a 1999 Explorer Sport.
Was told the timing chain needs to be replaced.
Q1 How do I troubleshoot this?
Q2 Is it even worth doing on a vehicle with 230,000 miles?
Q3 What can I expect to spend on this repair?
Q4 Can anyone provide detailed intructions for this repair?
Thanks,
John

i'm assuming you're talking about a 4.0L SOHC engine. if you've gotten 230K out of it you're way ahead of the curve. the symptom indicating the timing chain needs replacing is a rattling noise, which sounds similar to a diesel engine. it usually begins at start-up, but progresses to doing it all the time.

there are 2 chains, one in front and one in the rear. changing them both requires pulling the engine or transmission to gain access. it's a big job (+$2,000) and not worth doing on an engine with that many miles. if you're intent on keeping this vehicle you'd be better off finding a newer (2005 Mustang engine) with lower miles. i junked my SOHC this past May (and good riddens to that POS).

there are multiple threads on SOHC timing chain replacement on this forum. do a search.
