I currently have 130,000 miles on my 98 Explorer and I do not think that I will have this particular Explorer much longer. My issues are that my "Check Engine" light is on and my "OD" light is flashing. Most recently I was driving home from work and as I was coming to a stop at a Stop sign or red light and the car was downshifting, just before it got to a complete stop it would jump as if it was having a problem. I didn't think TOO much of it. I came back out to the car and tried to start the car. It started with no problem but when i put the car in D, it shut off. This process repeated a couple of times. I took it to the Auto shop and they pulled the codes off of the computer and they diagnosed it as a Torque Converter issue. They want $460 for parts labor and $140 re-programming which is quite a bit of money to be spending on a car that I dont see myself driving at this time next year. Does anyone A). know if replacing the torque converter will fix my issue or B). know if I dont replace it----will it ultimately leave me stranded somewhere? I really appreciate any input. I just dont know what to do.

Thanks BrooklynBay. I appreciate that.

The codes are P0741 and P1740.

If they take everything apart and find out that its just the TCC solenoid valve, do you think that will make things cheaper?
