Torque Converter unlocked?

I have a 91' Explorer 2wd and It just feels like the tranny isn't fully grabbing the engine until I reach overdrive. I've done pleanty of work on engines but transmissions are still a mystery to me. Can anyone help?

When is the last time you serviced the trans filter/fluid ?

A month ago. I do that annually. I just don't feel like it should have to shift at 3k rpms. The motor seems to have plenty of power. I have recently rode along in a 93' model that does the same thing. Is the A4ld just a crappy transmission?

That it is, and they are not known to last long on stock internals. I have seen people rebuild them with 5r55 internals, giving them more strength. I chose to upgrade mine when I had one...
