Tbars4 invited me to join him on a tour he setup with Local Motors, the company that builds the Rally Fighter offroad car. For a special treat, I was able to go for a ride with one of their employees. He definitely wasn't afraid to put the car through it's paces. They have a jump setup in their parking lot as well as a rough terrain section. We took several laps with a whole lot of sliding, tire squealing, and a long travel suspension easily able to soaking up the landings.
With all of the wheel travel this car has I was expecting a lot more body roll. Make no mistake, you can feel it, but the light weight, and low center of gravity in helps to keeps the tires planted to the ground during extreme cornering.
In order to purchase a new Rally Fighter you have to become involved with the actual build of the car. At least 51% of the vehicle must be owner built to satisfy regulations for kit cars. While we were there an owner was helping to build his new Rally Fighter.
These don't come cheap. they start at $100,000, but they are an amazing product that is extremely capable both on and offroad. It has the look of a sports car, with the chassis of an offroad racer. That makes for a lot of smiles! The car I rode in was equipped with a 420HP LS3. A 700 horsepower supercharged version will be available soon. Thanks to Ted, and folks at Local Motors for making this happen today.
