Tranny Help!

Hey guys,

My brother now has my old '91 sport w/ 150k. He called me today to tell me that he went to startup the truck this morning and put it into (d) little d and...

1. The engine just rev'd like in neutral
2. After in (d) moving to any other gear would result in neutral (not engaging)
3. But if you return to park or neutral and go directly to anyother gear
(R,D,3,2,1) the tranny will engage if you hold the brake until it fully
engages (3sec).
4. drives fine in D ("big D"), feels like full power, nice shifting
5. Checked the fluid, it was alittle low (less than 1/2quart) added no change.

No symptoms at all before this according to him.

Any suggestions would be greatly appriciated,

in order.... I'd check the vacuum modulator..... if it is ok. no fluid in the line etc, I'd drop the pan and check the Z link to the manual valve.... Is this the 4R44/55 or A4LD ? That was a changeover year....If 4R I'd add the Transmission Position Sensor (TPS)
