Tranny question???

Hello gang, Happy New Year

Hunny has an '04 Explorer w/ 4.6 and 5 speed auto. Seems transmission doesnt start off in first gear. On level ground never notice the problem because of no resistance. Starting on a hill, the motor revs and car doesnt want to go. Manually shift trans into first gear and car starts off as it should. What kind of a problem do i have here? As always, thank you... David

A scanner that can read codes and show data stream will help determine where the problem may be. I haven't had any issues with wrong gear starts with this transmission.
