Tranny swap question 5R55W to 5R55S

Will a 5R55S trany (with a V code) out of a 2003 Explorer with a 4.0L SOHC, fit in a 2002 Explorer that has the same motor but has the 5R55W tranny (with an R code) , without any mods. Both are 4x4's.

I'm not quite sure but it suppose to be. since the have the same control parts and sensors and even same solenoid block (the difference is only in the gear ratio)

the 5R55S is the updated and improved version of 5R55W

Only thing I wonder is if the bolt pattern is the same, I thought the W went with V-8's and the S went with V-6's. But you said the motors are the same, so maybe that won't be a problem.

There is 2 versions of 5R55S. One is for V6 and the other one is for V8. The difference is in the bellhousing.

These 5R55S both versions V6 4.0 & V8 4.6 are for S197 Mustangs 2005-2010

I see...so the 5r55w was for V-8 explorers then?

I don't know! Maybe there there is also 2 versions of 5R55W for exlorers V6 & V8 2002 and older

I'm working on my 2002 and I'm trying to switch to a 2003 5r55s and the forward gears stays in the top gear after looking at the wiring for both the 2002 has 21 wires on the main plug and the 2003 has 30 but the plug will plug in at the transmission just don't work right
