03 Explorer, 2wd V6, I made a video on youtube and will attempt to link to it to show how its acting in the driveway. I can make another video of it driving if that would help more than the description, but going to attempt to explain the situation in detail.
Starting from first sign, I had driven about 40 miles one night, fairly cool probably 25 degrees out, Truck sat for probably 3-4 hours, got back in, drove down road about 1/4 mile to Highway on ramp, Nearing end of on ramp I gave it a little extra throttle to get up to the 70mph speed limit, was probably doing 50 at the time. (Sorry don't remember the exact speed or gear at this point as it was about 3 months ago) When it downshifted, it felt like I had started riding the brakes. Engine was loaded, rpms up but truck felt like I was riding the brakes while trying to get up to speed. I let off the gas for a second then tried again. It downshifted normally and took off like normal, upshifted fine, and drove the 40ish miles home fine, getting off this highway onto another and about 4 more stoplights along the second highway.( So full range of shifting up and down for 4 or so stoplights). Shut it off at home, started it back up and backed out, went around the block, came back and everything seemed normal. Next day, put it in reverse and it backed about half out of the parking space and let go. If I let off the gas it would "bounce" (like it does in the video attached) and just let go until it idled back down and gas was pushed again. I thought " ok great I lost reverse." I went ahead and went to the store with it, forward (OD) seemed normal for about a block. Got up to about 30mph and it felt like I was riding the brakes again. Let off and it shifted and caught the next gear. Drove about 10 blocks or so fine, Leave the store it starts doing it again, stopped at a light and it didn't want to go. Bounced like reverse. Dropped it into Manual 1st and it felt like a normal bump of shifting into gear but wouldn't move. After about 4 or 5 seconds it slammed hard and was in 1st. Drove it using 1st and 2nd and driving slowly manually shifting when needed. Parked it for a few weeks at a buddys apartment that was closer.
Got a call saying it needed to be moved so I went to get it, pushed it out of the stall, started in manual first and manually shifted. At this point I didn't even wanna mess with it so I ran it hard and got the speed/rpms up, and tried 3rd. It caught for a few seconds then the "riding the brakes" happened again. Let off the gas and eased back on it and it held third. (3rd Is hit and miss/gotta be right throttle pressure and speed.) I ran it up to about 50 and threw it into OD. It revved for about 2 seconds and caught OD. Drove Ok rest of the way till I had to slow down. Once it downshifts to slow down, I get no movement unless I go to manual 1st or manual 2nd. It then sat there for about a month. (I did get flashing O/D Off light on this drive.)
Then I moved and decided to bring the truck home. I threw around the idea of trailering it, but wanted to see if itd make the trip since I couldn't get ahold of a trailer that day. So I took it to the gas station, put some gas in, aired tires up better, and hit the highway. Manually shifting it drove great down the highway, Full overdrive and lockup. downshifted and upshifted automatically for hills and when braking and speeding up for slower moving traffic. I didn't wanna really push it and see if a full throttle downshift would hold, but passing cars was not a problem without having to manually down and upshift. Drove it 30 or so miles this way. Of course slowing down off the highway and streets to get to the new house had to be manually shifted. I did get a CEL this time. Parked the truck and didn't touch it for about 2 months until today. Took it down to the store about 2 miles away to air tires up. Same manual shifting required, CEL came back on (battery had died sitting) Grabbed code reader when I got back and its showing P1700. No other codes. No other new problems or signs. Fluid level is good, ( Checked it after store trip the day after finding the problem.) Fluid Level still has a good thin stream, looks normal. Called a couple Ford dealers and a couple transmission supply places and they are saying it points to the one way clutch assembly. But none of them could be sure without bringing it in. They want to do a full tear down and diagnostics with it in the truck, etc.
Frankly I don't have that kind of money right now when this is not my only means of transportation. Plus, I want to attempt to do it myself. I do everything but transmissions and Im looking at this as a good chance to start working on transmission internals. Finally have a place it can sit in pieces for however long it needs to, and a good place to tear the trans apart out of the weather. I will attempt to link to my youtube video, and any suggestions or pointers/ideas are appreciated. I don't really want to rebuild the entire trans, mostly because of funds, but I know it would be a great learning experience. If I could go in and fix this problem without a total rebuild etc, I could start using the truck more and as more work is available, start saving up for mods. I ultimately plan on a V8 swap later so putting a bunch of money in it now when its not the only vehicle in the stable just doesn't make a lot of sense.
On a side note. My buddy got my F150 stuck in the mud in my field, pulling 1900 lbs of junk metal out on a trailer, I took the explorer down there, made him help me push it back to the truck and hooked up to it. Threw it in first and eased the slack out of the chain, then walked right out with it. I just don't feel that the trans is shot between that and being able to get it to run down the highway.
Other things of note that I can think of, from reading several transmission problem threads here, I do have good engine braking in manual 1st and manual 2nd. I do know that it definitely dose have manual first as you can tell a difference when starting from a dead stop in 1st or 2nd. That's all I can think of right now, I may add something later if I can think of anything that may help in diagnosing the issues. Sorry so long, but want to be as detailed as I can to minimize question and answer posts before we get somewhere with actual determination. I have not pulled the trans to start tear down yet. Planning to pull in the next few days if/when it decides to quit raining.
Thanks in advance to anybody that feels like tackling this and reading this book.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GYCkyoGljN8 Sorry for being annoying, first youtube vid Ive done and was trying to catch any and all abnormal movements noises. Notice the slow squeak/creak sound when going into forward positions. Eventually quits making that sound after a few times and warming up some. May be of some help? I do hold the brake when going into manual first in the video, you'll hear the brakes grabbing/grunting (rust layer from sitting) When focused on instrument panel, Im applying approx. the same amount of throttle each rev to show how it revs/ loads the engine, depending on gear position.
