Trans oil change

There should be drain and fill plugs on the side of the tranny that take a 3/8" ratchet extension. At least on my son's 5 speed Mustang that's how it is. Get a suction gun to fill it with. Drain the old lube, replace the drain plug, then pump the fresh lube into the fill hole. The manual tranny takes regular Mercon ATF (not Mercon V like the automatics). I use Mobil 1 ATF in my t-case and the Mustang tranny. It takes a bit less than 2 quarts.

If you have a 4x4 Trac the process to change the t-case lube is the same. Plugs are on the back side of the t-case.

Thank you sir, very helpful.

one other thing.... what's the "t-case"?

transfer case. Its the module that switches the truck between 2wd, 4x4 hi and 4x4lo

Just a small warning. When you drain the manual transmission be prepared for the jet of fluid that comes out. I underestimated the force that it would come out with and totally missed the drain pan and made a nice mess. The drain plug faces toward the back of the truck, it doesn't face the ground.

Thanks ClusterPup, I probably would have made the same mistake there.

I also finally found the fill hole for the differential, that will be getting fresh oil this weekend.

I found the drain/fill plugs on the T-case this morning. Easy enough to get to, I'll be doing that this weekend. But the Transmission....That is a different story so far. I have not been able to find the fill hole. would you guys be able to help me pinpoint that? I'd appreciate it.

I have a suction gun already and it's ready and willing to get some fluid running.

I just climbed under the trac again, from the drivers side. can not find the pan you guys are talking about to drop for the trans..... so I say to my self, I need to look around. kI found a large (24mm) plug near the bottom of the trans that is bugging the crap out-a me(because there is fresh oil hanging on it) and low-n-behold there is a work stamped above it that reads "DRAIN". Ah-Ha! Now have found the drain and the fill plug! Yup she's a bit low on trans fluid. So my list for this weekend:
1. Diff fluid
2. T-case fluid
3. trans fluid

Thanks guys!

Be sure to take the fill plug out before draining the oil. You don't want to drain everything out and then find out the fill plug is stuck. Then you're screwed.

Good idea! Already checked it so I knew I would be able to fill it. then tightened up the drain plug.

Update

No auto mechanic here but at 82,000 miles I pulled the pan, replaced the filter and installed a drain plug. I figure after a few thousand miles I'll drain it/refill it and eventually end up with nice clean fresh ATF. I wasn't having any issues and the fluid looked OK. Not its bright color when it's new but not burnt or badly discolored. Hopefully it will all work out well.

Forgot that I had posted this. Here's an update and advice...don't drill a hole through your transmission pan and install one of those cheap chinese made drain plugs. I knew it was a bad idea before I even tightened the bit into the chuck but did it anyways. After a couple thousand miles I noticed a drip, attempted to tighten it up but found the whole thing turning....the back side nut had come loose! Ended up pulling the pan and replacing the cheap chinese crap with some american hardware...a nut, bolt, and washers!
